Review IDC's 2004 European Storage Survey: Optimism, Supplier Preferences, SAN Bundles, and High-Capacity, Low-Cost Drives / IDC Research:

"The results of this survey tell us that there is a high correlation between the types of applications driving storage spending over the next twelve months and the types of applications end users feel are best suited for use with arrays containing high-capacity, low-cost drives," said Eric Sheppard, a research manager for IDC's European Disk Storage Systems service. "This correlation suggests that suppliers should expect healthy end-user acceptance of (and thus, revenue growth from) such arrays in Europe. " This document offers data and analysis of IDC's 2004 European storage survey, which was conducted by telephone during the fourth calendar quarter of 2004. 523 end users were surveyed in the U. K. , Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the Nordics. All respondents were either directly involved in storage purchasing or had some type of influence over storage purchases. Among other things, this survey is intended to: Document past and future investments in storage Determine end-user adoption of storage area networks (SANs) and the average size of a SAN based on number of servers, arrays, switches, ports, and disk capacity Find out which type of supplier end users are most likely to turn to for storage, and which type of supplier is believed to be best positioned to also help solve various storage challenges What storage technology characteristics are most desirable to end users.

Review Business User Spending Intentions 2004 - European Mobile Devices / IDC Research:

This IDC study presents the results concerning mobile devices (encompassing handhelds, smart phones, and mobile phones) from its survey of European business computer hardware purchasers. Recommendations are made regarding the requirements of IT directors from vendors and predictions on how architectures will develop over the coming years. Specifically IDC examines the findings related to the following issues: The extent of mobile device adoption by businesses Types of devices being utilized and relative popularity of device brands Applications being used on mobile devices and those considered most important by the user The individuals within the enterprise using various mobile devices Companies' purchase and investment intentions with regard to handhelds, wireless networks, and 3G The individuals/departments within companies responsible for purchase decisions and those responsible for purchasing The findings from the 2004 IDC survey provide vendors, channel partners, and users with intriguing and valuable insights into the purchase and use of mobile devices within the enterprise. Commenting on the 2004 findings, Geoff Blaber, research analyst, IDC European Mobile Devices, said "The utilization of mobile devices within the enterprise is in an interesting position in 2004. While the IT market is characterized by a more encouraging economic outlook, company IT spending is still overshadowed by lingering uncertainty and a concern that budgets are directed towards essential hardware renewals and infrastructure upgrades. Furthermore, as converged devices (smart phones and telephony-enabled PDAs) begin to gain momentum and sales of standalone PDAs level out, the IT decision maker is being met with an expanding array of devices with differing functionality and application potential to meet employee requirements. Review Personal and Mobile Computing Survey - Business User Spending Intentions, 2005 / IDC Research:

2004 was a positive year for the Western European commercial PC market. While the previous year had seen some encouraging signs in terms of the replacement of aging client computing infrastructure, these were by enlarge essential renewals — renewals of necessity. 2004 built upon this optimism and saw budgets being freed up, corporate refreshes shifting up a gear, and continued buoyancy from the small and medium business markets. However, what is of key concern to the market is what will happen during the course of 2005: will business growth be maintained and what will be the key drivers of this growth? The results of IDC's business user survey confirm that the market is expected to be characterized by the following trends over the coming 12 months: More desktop PCs and more notebook PCs will be purchased per business in 2005 than in 2004. "A greater number of new notebook purchases will replace desktops in 2005 than in 2004. Reliability, battery life and hard-disk size are the three most important factors taken into consideration when a notebook purchasing decision is made," said Ian Gibbs, senior research analyst with IDC's European Personal Computing Team. Improving data security remains the most important investment priority in 2005, although replacing aging systems and upgrades to Windows XP are rated as second and third most important respectively. Cost constraints and a lack of understanding of new technologies remain the biggest inhibitors to new investment proposals, however. Survey respondents did reveal an uplift in interest in Linux as a Microsoft alternative. Demand for wireless capabilities is also on the rise, while businesses will in fact demand greater technological innovation from vendors. [+]
Overall business IT spending should increase in 2005, with over half of this year's respondents expecting to spend more in 2005 than they did in 2004. The results of IDC's personal and mobile computing business survey, 2005 (undertaken between December 2004 and January 2005), which are detailed and analyzed in this study, provide vendors, end users, and channel players with an important insight into what IT managers are seeking in terms of IT investment and how IT vendors should address their needs. Their concerns, intentions, and perceptions of client computing are highlighted, as are their attitudes to technologies both new and old.

Review Western European PC Market Analysis, 1Q05 / IDC Research:

The Western European PC market recorded another solid performance in 1Q05, with growth of 15. 3% and PC shipment volumes close to 10. 8 million units. Higher than anticipated consumer demand acted as a key driver this quarter, for both desktop and notebook form factors. Consumers reacted very positively to falling ASVs, attractive digital bundles, and the decline in broadband prices. However, while stronger than expected demand from consumers clearly lifted overall sales, the commercial market saw sustained levels of demand underpinning the continued role of renewals and upgrades as a key driver in Western Europe. Desktop sales recorded 8. 6% growth year on year, boosted by an uplift in consumer demand for multimedia and media center type systems. Commercial desktop demand displayed softer trends, directly affected by the increasing shift towards portable systems in the SMB market and lower corporate refresh activity. The momentum in notebook growth continued unabated in Europe, with notebook shipments recording another solid quarter at 27. [+]
3%. Buoyant consumer demand and strong desktop replacement trends in the SMB market have continued to assist overall growth across the region. The notebook market remained a major vendor battlefield. The strength of the euro clearly helped vendors to maintain very competitive price points with continued price erosion leading to an ASV decline by over 10% year on year. In 2Q05, PC shipments are expected to grow by 11. 3% with notebooks growing by 26% against 3. 2% for desktops. "Continued portable adoption in the consumer space and strong desktop replacement trends in the SMB space, along with continued price erosion expected in 2005, will continue to fuel notebook sales and drive PC sales growth across the region for the remainder of the year," said Ian Gibbs, senior research analyst with IDC's European Personal Computing team.

Review West Europe Incumbent Operator Voice Strategies, 2004 / IDC Research:

This document examines the voice market strategies for incumbents in 16 European countries. It analyzes what steps incumbents are taking to defend their market shares in traditional voice services, how successful those steps have been so far, and how incumbents perceive voice over IP (VoIP) services now that competitive operators have launched services in most European countries over the past year. "With the overall European PSTN/ISDN voice market now in permanent decline, and the large percentage of total revenues that those services represent for incumbents, the steps that incumbents take over the next several years in managing their PSTN/ISDN voice services will be critical to their survival," said Jill Finger Gibson, research director, European Fixed-voice Services.

Review Western European Mobile Devices Forecast and Analysis, 2003-2008 Update / IDC Research:

This IDC study examines the performance of the smart handheld devices market in Western Europe during the first part of 2004 and examines the outlook for 2003–2008. Forecasts are available by form factor, price band, operating system, display, RAM class, segment, channel, and 16 Western European countries. Examining the market reality of 2003, this study offers in-depth analysis on current and future market trends along with key recommendations and guidance for vendors and enterprises. During the first six months of 2004 the Western European smart handheld device (SHD) market, which includes handheld devices and converged devices, increasing to 2. 18 million units representing an overall annual growth of 27% over the same period in 2003. Despite the market diverging into two camps handheld device (traditional standalone PDAs) and converged devices (phone enabled PDAs and smart phones) — there remain challenges and opportunities for both segments. "The vast majority of voice-centric converged devices, especially Series 60, are sold to consumers that have little knowledge or interest in their advanced capabilities," said Andrew Brown, program manager, European Mobile Devices, IDC. "While in itself this may not necessarily be a problem, vendors and operators will start to reconsider their stance if the investment in converged device hardware and software does not lead to increased revenues. At the moment, integrating an open OS device into an operator or vendor's own services and applications can be problematic — strict APIs and a lack of flexibility increase development costs, and this been cited as the reason behind the long delays in device releases. ".

This IDC study examines the customer relationship management (CRM) applications market in Western Europe for the period 2003–2008, with market growth forecasts, forecast assumptions, and vendor guidance. The $2. 1 billion Western European CRM applications market finally appears to be turning healthy with a predicted 2004 growth of 2%. The market is expected to grow to $2. 6 billion in 2008 with a 2004–2008 CAGR of 4. 6%. "Software-as-a-service CRM offerings represent a key growth driver. Software-as-a-service will broaden the overall CRM adoption, rather than steal users from traditional CRM solutions. This expansion of the CRM user base will much more than offset the lowered per-user price point of software-as-a-service solutions," said Bo Lykkegaard, senior research analyst, IDC European Software Group.

"The midrange tape automation market is enjoying revenue growth, up 9% in 2004. We expect slowing of growth in value through 2006. It is at that point that the market will begin to feel the affect of customer spending decisions with disk-based backup solutions displacing tape hardware purchases. In 2007 we expect to see tape automation spending to begin to decline," said Peyton.

Review Overview of IT Distribution Channels in Western Europe, 2003-2008: Back to Basics / IDC Research:

"The extent to which the indirect channels can take advantage of the improving business context will depend on how quickly they can adapt their business models to shifting demand patterns and customer cost/quality expectations," said Brian Pearce, program manager for IDC EMEA's Distribution Channels Expertise Center. "Increasingly, it will depend on their ability to sell, and to sell not just IT products and services but themselves. " This study is an update of IDC's distribution channel estimates and forecasts in Western Europe for the period 2003 to 2008. A full overview study covering all 16 countries in detail will be published in July 2005. The present study provides a quantitative overview of IT distribution in Western Europe for the region as a whole. The study examines the long-term business prospects for IT distribution channels in Western Europe as a whole for the period 2003–2008. Forecasts of business development, both by direct and indirect channels, are provided. Forecasts include the indirect channels' share of hardware, packaged software, and service with a detailed breakdown of hardware by product line.
