Review Carrot Seed / Live Oak Media:

When a little boy plants a carrot seed, everyone tells him it won't grow. But when you are very young, there are some things that you just know, and the little boy knows that one day a carrot will come up. So he waters his seed, and pulls the weeds, and he waits. First published in 1945 and never out of print, this timeless combination of Ruth Krauss's simple text and Crockett Johnson's eloquent illustrations creates a triumphant and deeply satisfying story for readers of all ages. Ruth Krauss, author of A Hole Is to Dig, has crafted a story almost Zen-like in its simplicity. A little boy plants a carrot seed and waits patiently, tending to it carefully, while everyone around him insists that "it won't come up. " His conviction is steadfast, however, and sure enough, a carrot worthy of first prize at any state fair springs forth from the earth. Krauss's husband, Crockett Johnson (creator of Harold and the Purple Crayon), illustrated The Carrot Seed, and while the little boy is rendered with uncomplicated lines, all of his hope, confidence, and serenity shine through. [+]
The image that resonates most strongly in this minimalist tale is the unfaltering faith of the mild-mannered little boy. Young readers learn that standing your ground in the face of opposition and doubt can often result in twice the reward expected (even thrice the reward, if judging by the girth of this carrot). (Ages 4 to 8).

Review Gingerbread Man / Live Oak Media:

The author of Nanny Goat and the Seven Little Kids offers a new version of the classic folktale about a runaway gingerbread man. Run, run, as fast as you can and catch this version of the gingerbread man! Eric A. Kimmel is an education professor who has become one of the most respected retellers of traditional folk tales in the United States. In addition to The Gingerbread Man, his successes include the series of Anansi folk tales and Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins, a Caldecott Honor Book. In this wonderful new take on the never-stale gingerbread man story, the cookie in question (with three peppermint buttons) gets eaten by the wily fox, which is sometimes upsetting to younger preschoolers. Happily, the last page shows a new cookie sheet lined with gingerbread men (and women), and the clever rhyme suggests that the gingerbread man bounces back from his unfortunate plight. "For gingerbread men return, it's said, / When someone bakes some gingerbread. " Seasoned illustrator Megan Lloyd's flat and funny gingerbread man bounces along as cheerfully as the text. Cookie lovers everywhere will relish this old-fashioned tale with a happy ending-especially if you bake a batch of gingerbread people afterwards! (Ages 3 to 6).

Review The Midwife's Apprentice / Listening Library (Audio):

'Like Cushman's 1995 Newbery Honor Book, Catherine, Called Birdy, this novel is about a strong young woman in medieval England who finds her own way home. This is a world, like Chaucer's, that's. dangerous, primitive and raucous. From the first page you're caught by the spirit of the homeless, nameless waif, somewhere around 12 years old. She gets the village midwife to take her in, befriends a cat, names herself Alyce, and learns something about delivering babies. When she fails, she runs away, but she picks herself up again and returns to work and independence. ' -ALA Booklist (starred review). '. [+]
A fascinating view of a far distant time. ' - The Horn Book (starred review) Karen Cushman likes to write with her tongue firmly planted in her cheek, and her feisty female characters firmly planted in history. In The Midwife's Apprentice, which earned the 1996 Newbery Medal, this makes a winning combination for children and adult readers alike. Like her award-winning book Catherine, Called Birdy, the story takes place in medieval England. This time our protagonist is Alyce, who rises from the dung heap (literally) of homelessness and namelessness to find a station in life-apprentice to the crotchety, snaggletoothed midwife Jane Sharp. On Alyce's first solo outing as a midwife, she fails to deliver. Instead of facing her ignorance, Alyce chooses to run from failure-never a good choice. Disappointingly, Cushman does not offer any hardships or internal wrestling to warrant Alyce's final epiphanies, and one of the book's climactic insights is when Alyce discovers that lo and behold she is actually pretty! Still, Cushman redeems her writing, as always, with historical accuracy, saucy dialogue, fast-paced action, and plucky, original characters that older readers will eagerly devour. (Ages 12 and older) -Gail Hudson.

Meanwhile, the problem appears to be solved when Imogene awakes the next morning antler-free. But the family (and the reader) are in for a surprise when Imogene comes down to breakfast.

Review Sleeping Reader® 4 CD Day/Night Reading Program / Sleeping Reader® / EasyReadingProgram.com:

What is Sleeping Reader®? Sleeping Reader® is a 6 month - 4 CD audio daytime/nighttime reading program. The course will take the student through lessons that use word sound associations, memorized learning, repetition, and other word & sound exercises. Over the course of the program the student will literally listen to the lessons thousands of times. This repetitive learning technique speeds up the learning process and solves many of the common problems associated with reading. If you have been searching for a reading program that: 1. Is fun and easy to use. 2. Is backed by years of research. 3. Does not require hours of your time to teach your student. [+]
4. Helps people with several learning disabilities. 4. Is proven to work. 5. Is 100% Guaranteed. Sleeping Reader® is the solution. How Does It Work? There are 3 Basic Steps to learning how to read. (1) Learning the letter names. (2) Learning the sounds of each letter. (3) Learning the image of each letter. Most teaching methods try to teach all three steps at the same time and unfortunately many people have difficulty learning to read this way. By teaching the first two steps independently of the third step, the process of learning to read is dramatically increased (up to 10 times faster). Sleeping Reader® combines this technique with thousands of repetitions, memorized learning, sound and word associations and combines it all in a fun and easy to use program that will not take up your valuable time or hard earned money.
