Review Bananas Can't Fly / Hodder & Stoughton Audio Books:

Des O'Connor has been a major star in Britain since landing his first television series in 1963. Now, in his own words, he relives the events of his extraordinary life in an autobiography that is both candid and entertaining. From his childhood struggle against ill-health in London's impoverished East End to his current positions as international showbiz icon, Des O'Connor talks with humour and affection about his friends and family; about his relationships with fellow celebrities; why he declined to the offer to host the world's first-ever global talk show and many other secrets. Des O'Connor not only allows us a rare glimpse into his own life and career but also takes us behind the scenes of his enormously successful talk show. But at the centre lies the man whose own remarkable story proves him to be one of the brightest stars of all.

Review The Worst Journey in the World: Library Edition / Blackstone Audiobooks:

This is the story of Scott's last expedition to the Antarctic. The author, the youngest member of Scott's British Antarctic Expedition, relates the expeditions departure from England in 1910 to its arrival in New Zealand in 1913. As Apsley Cherry-Garrard states in his introduction to the harrowing story of the Scott expedition to the South Pole, "Polar Exploration is at once the cleanest and most isolated way of having a bad time which has been devised. " Cherry-Garrard's The Worst Journey in the World is a gripping account of an expedition gone disastrously wrong. The youngest member of Scott's team, the author was later part of the rescue party that eventually found the frozen bodies of Scott and three men who had accompanied Scott on the final push to the Pole. These deaths would haunt Cherry-Garrard for the rest of his life as he questioned the decisions he had made and the actions he had taken in the days leading up to the Polar Party's demise. Prior to this sad denouement, Cherry-Garrard's account is filled with details of scientific discovery and anecdotes of human resilience in a harsh environment. Each participant in the Scott expedition is brought fully to life. Cherry-Garrard's recollections are supported by diary excerpts and accounts from other teammates. Despite the sad fate of Scott, the reader will grudgingly agree with the closing words of The Worst Journey in the World: "Exploration is the physical expression of the Intellectual Passion. [+]
And I tell you, if you have the desire for knowledge and the power to give it physical expression, go out and explore. If you march your Winter Journeys you will have your reward, so long as all you want is a penguin's egg. ".

Review Greg Dyke: Inside Story / HarperCollins Audio:

The eagerly awaited, explosive account by Greg Dyke of his four years at the helm of the BBC - and of their fiery end in January this year. On 28 January 2000, Greg Dyke became Director-General of the BBC. His appointment was controversial. He was accused of being a 'Tony crony'. The organization he joined was in trouble. An atmosphere of fear permeated the BBC; his predecessor, John Birt, was disliked by large numbers of the staff. People believed what they achieved was 'despite' the management, not thanks to it. In the next four years, Greg Dyke launched four new TV channels and five radio stations, and changed the culture of the whole organization. BBC One became the most popular channel in Britain for the first time. Staff surveys showed a complete turnaround in the attitude of the people working for the BBC. [+]
On 28 January 2004 Greg Dyke left his post after the biggest conflict between the Government and the BBC in living memory. The Iraq war had claimed another victim. When he announced he was going, some 3000 members of the staff took to the streets to protest. Thousands signed petitions. This is Greg Dyke's story of those few years - plus a lot more.
