Review See It My Way / Chivers Audio Books:Peter White was the second blind son born to sighted parents just after the war. His education took place before the days of integrated schooling for all (for which he is extremely grateful) and he describes with great honesty and humour the peculiar regimes of the special boarding schools he attended. Accepted into university he found the world outside more difficult to adapt to, but by a combination of despair and determination he forced his way into radio broadcasting and is now a senior correspondent with the BBC. He portrays his experiences without a trace of sentimentality but with humour and passion. This is not a book for the politically correct, but will leave its readers with a sense of purpose and achievement.

Review London - The Biography: Trade and Enterprise (London a Biography) / Random House Audiobooks:Much of Peter Ackroyd's work has been concerned with the life and past of London but here, as a culmination, is his account of the city. For him it is an organism with its own laws of growth and change, so this is a "biography" rather than a history. This part covers trade and enterprise.

Review From This Day Forward / Unabridged Library Edition:When Cokie and Steve Roberts got married, some "friends" said it wouldn't last because she's Catholic and he's Jewish. In this book, Cokie and Steve discuss issues of their own marriage as well as tell tales of famous unions in history, like that of John and Abigail Adams, as seen from their different perspectives as man and wife. Conversations with contemporary couples show the foundation of marriage as one that's undergone tremendous amounts of change while remaining fundamentally the same.

Review The Worst Journey in the World: Library Edition / Blackstone Audiobooks:Cherry-Gerrards classic story of bravery and fortitude, first published in 1922 tells us of Scotts last expedition to the Antarctic from its departure from England in 1910 to its arrival in New Zealand in 1913. It is one of the most famous and tragic in the annals of exploration. As Apsley Cherry-Garrard states in his introduction to the harrowing story of the Scott expedition to the South Pole, "Polar Exploration is at once the cleanest and most isolated way of having a bad time which has been devised. " Cherry-Garrard's The Worst Journey in the World is a gripping account of an expedition gone disastrously wrong. The youngest member of Scott's team, the author was later part of the rescue party that eventually found the frozen bodies of Scott and three men who had accompanied Scott on the final push to the Pole. These deaths would haunt Cherry-Garrard for the rest of his life as he questioned the decisions he had made and the actions he had taken in the days leading up to the Polar Party's demise. Prior to this sad denouement, Cherry-Garrard's account is filled with details of scientific discovery and anecdotes of human resilience in a harsh environment. Each participant in the Scott expedition is brought fully to life. Cherry-Garrard's recollections are supported by diary excerpts and accounts from other teammates. Despite the sad fate of Scott, the reader will grudgingly agree with the closing words of The Worst Journey in the World: "Exploration is the physical expression of the Intellectual Passion. [+]
And I tell you, if you have the desire for knowledge and the power to give it physical expression, go out and explore. If you march your Winter Journeys you will have your reward, so long as all you want is a penguin's egg. ".

Review Cary Grant: A Class Apart / Reef Audio:More than a biography, this is a savvy portrait of how Archie Leach, born to a poor working-class family in Bristol, England became Cary Grant, one of Hollywood's most irresistible and admired celebrities of all time. Writing with the low-key stylishness his subject deserves, British academic Graham McCann pays tribute to the working-class Englishman who became "a democratic symbol of gentlemanly grace" to moviegoers worldwide. Aptly subtitled "A Class Apart," the book sympathetically depicts Archie Leach-born into poverty, his mother committed to an asylum when he was nine-reinventing himself as Cary Grant, whose debonair screen persona showed no signs of these difficult origins. A decorous account of Grant's private life (McCann dismisses talk of bisexuality as mere rumor) accompanies cogent descriptions of his performances.

Review The Color of Water: A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother / Audio Literature:Around the narrative of Ruth McBride Jordan, a. k. a. Rachel Deborah Shilsky, the daughter of an angry, failed Orthodox Jewish rabbi in the South, her son James writes of the inner confusions he felt as a black child of a white mother and of the love and faith with which his mother surrounded their large family. The result is a powerful portrait of growing up, a meditation on race and identity, and a poignant, beautifully crafted hymn from a son to his mother. Order this book. and please don't be put off by its pallid subtitle, A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother, which doesn't begin to do justice to the utterly unique and moving story contained within. The Color of Water tells the remarkable story of Ruth McBride Jordan, the two good men she married, and the 12 good children she raised. [+]
Jordan, born Rachel Shilsky, a Polish Jew, immigrated to America soon after birth; as an adult she moved to New York City, leaving her family and faith behind in Virginia. Jordan met and married a black man, making her isolation even more profound. The book is a success story, a testament to one woman's true heart, solid values, and indomitable will. Ruth Jordan battled not only racism but also poverty to raise her children and, despite being sorely tested, never wavered. In telling her story-along with her son's-The Color of Water addresses racial identity with compassion, insight, and realism. It is, in a word, inspiring, and you will finish it with unalloyed admiration for a flawed but remarkable individual. And, perhaps, a little more faith in us all.

Review An Evening with Johnners / Hodder & Stoughton Ltd:Reminiscing about his long life and career at the BBC, Brian talks about many of the diverse occasions and programmes with which he was involved - He also indulges in his well-known love of (rather bad) jokes and puns. In this revised edition of "An Evening with Johnners", which contains previously unreleased material, the sheer warmth of Brian's personality comes across to the listener, and it is virtually impossible not to feel at one with the members of the highly appreciative theatre audience.
