"I've loved every one of Susanna's books! She has bedrock research and a butterfly's delicate touch with characters—sure recipe for historical fiction that sucks you in and won't let go!"— DIANA GABALDON, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Outlander

A hauntingly beautiful tale of love that transcends time. A modern American woman travels to Scotland to write a novel about the Jacobite Rebellion— only to discover that the vivid scenes and the romantic hero she's imagining actually exist...

In the spring of 1708, invading Jacobites plot to land the exiled James Stewart on the Scottish coast to reclaim his crown. When young Sophia Paterson travels to Slains Castle by the sea, she finds herself in the midst of the dangerous intrigue.

Now, American writer Carrie McClelland hopes to base her next bestselling novel on that story of her ancestors in the dim, dark past . Settling herself in the shadow of Slains Castle, she starts to write.
But as Carrie's mind slips back in time, she learns of the ultimate betrayal that happened all those years ago, making her the only living person who knows the truthand that knowledge comes very close to destroying her.

What an incredible read! I could not put it down even tho I HAD to take my time! The history lesson was awesome! But the best was the story from the woman about her descendants! I can’t wait to continue reading her books.

Not one to write a review but this book takes you into a world that seamlessly holds you from one century to another and makes you comfortable in each. As much as I think technology has made us into zombies within our own world, there's nothing better than downloading a brilliant book at midnight and reading until dawn.

Read this book a long time ago and I remember I loved it! Especially the story that took place in the past!
  • NOT science fiction or fantasy

I really was disappointed in this book. The male characters were cartoon characters and the heroine never engaged me. It read like one of my mother's grade B romance novels. If you like Outlander... And the only reason I mention that book in the context of this one is, that as I was searching for a way to write this review I saw another poster mention it, this book will bore you to death. I wrote the review because this is the first time in my life I have ever wanted to take a book back and demand a refund. Many of the fantastical elements are glossed over, none of the "real" elements feels real. I want my money back... And my investment of time.

Susanna has a way of writing characters that remain with you long after you turn the last page. All of the books I've read from her are magical in that way (Mariana, The Shadowy Horses and the sequel to this one The Firebird. This is a dual timeline novel with a present day author writing a romantic fiction piece and what happens to her along the way. Both parts of the story are fabulous and the historical parts are interesting and concise. I didn't want either story to end, but alas they did. The audiobook version was very well done, so consider either or both. I also highly recommend the sequel (of sorts) The Firebird due out in June 2013. I bought the UK version which is out. One of the main leads is Robbie from The Shadowy Horses.

Great story, but had to skim through all the history parts. Too much detail in that area for me to enjoy. I may try another of her books.
  • Enjoyable

I read this after the first Outlander book. I enjoyed the characters and the romance, but for me I was transported by her settings. (I have a trip to Scotland planned). The history got a little long-winded at times, but I enjoyed the book's length just as well. Not the absolute best historical fiction I've ever read, but I did REALLY like the story line of her lovers. Glad I read it; would read her again.
  • Best Book I've Read in a While

I couldn't put this book down - I tore through it in 2 days. I loved the dual plots and how they eventually became one. This book is romantic, but not overly so like some romances are. It's classier than that. The end was very emotional and it touched my heart. Bravo to the author. I hope she writes more books as good as this gem. I'm recommending Winter Sea to all of my bookworm friends!
