Review The Notebooks of Samuel Taylor Coleridge / Routledge:During his adult life until his death in 1834, Coleridge made entries in more than sixty notebooks. Neither commonplace books nor diaries, but something of both, they contain notes on literary, theological, philosophical, scientific, social, and psychological matters, plans for and fragments of works, and many other items of great interest. This fourth double volume of the Notebooks covers the years 1819 through 1826. The range of Coleridge's reading, his endless questioning, and his recondite sources continue to fascinate the reader. Included here are drafts and full versions of the later poems. Many passages reflect the theological interests that led to Coleridge's writing of Aids to Reflection, later to become an important source for the Transcendentalists. Another development in this volume is the startling expansion of Coleridge's interest in "the theory of life" and in chemistry-the laboratory chemistry of the Royal Institution of Great Britain and the theoretical chemistry of German transcendentalists such as Oken, Steffens, and Oersted. Also contained in this volume is an important section on the meaning of marriage.

Review The Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, 13-Volume Set / University of Nebraska Press:Since the time of Columbus, explorers dreamed of a water passage across the North American continent. President Thomas Jefferson shared this dream. He conceived the Corps of Discovery to travel up the Missouri River to the Rocky Mountains and westward along possible river routes to the Pacific Ocean. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led this expedition of 1804–6. Along the way they filled hundreds of notebook pages with observations of the geography, Indian tribes, and natural history of the trans-Mississippi West. This complete set of the celebrated Nebraska edition incorporates the journals along with a wide range of new scholarship dealing with all aspects of the expedition, including geography, Indian languages, plants, and animals, in order to recreate the expedition within its historical context.

Review Great British Book Collectors and their Libraries (Bookcollecting & Bibliomania) / Thoemmes Continuum:It was Dibdin who gave us the word bibliomania, and so it is fitting to build this collection around him. His Bibliomania, here reprinted from a revised edition, is an affectionate personal history of book-collecting through the ages. Bibliographical descriptions are complemented and expanded in The Library Companion, a book full of detail designed to bring out the book-collector in every educated person. Merryweather, Burton, Elton, Fletcher and Hazlitt relate their own and other collectors' passions through the ages, both in Britain and abroad. Together they form an extraordinary biographical dictionary of pioneers in the accumulation of culture and learning. Without these book-collectors' devotion of time, money, knowledge and taste, and the subsequent wholesale bequest or sale of their collections, public libraries as we know them would be greatly impoverished. -Informative accounts of British bibliophiles -Valuable biographical and bibliographical documentation on the British book trade.

Review Collected Works of Henry Fielding (Collected Works) / Routledge:During his brief lifetime, Henry Fielding turned his hand to virtually every genre. Along with Tom Jones and the other novels, this set includes works from his prolific playwrighting career, essays on crime and social reform that arose from his experience as a Justice of the Peace in London, miscellaneous poems, articles from the Anti-Jacobite, and other pieces of Whig journalism. Admired by writers and readers alike, Fielding's concern with the injustices of England's social structure and legal system and his fascination with-and delight-in "Human Nature" profoundly influenced the course of the English novel, from his own time well into the era of Dickens and Thackeray. The novels in this collection are illustrated by William Small.

Review Collected Works of Francis Bacon / Routledge:Sir Francis Bacon, statesman, essayist and philosopher, studied law and rose to high office as Lord Chancellor. He had enormous influence on the change of direction for scientific method from being speculative and philosophical in the Aristotelian tradition to making it experimental and factual. Bacon's philosophical influence extended to Locke and through him to subsequent English schools of psychology and ethics. Abroad, his influence also extended to Leibniz, Huygens and Voltaire who called him "la pere de la philosophie experimentale". This edition contains all Bacon's philosophical works as well as translations, plus literary and professional works and includes illuminating introductions and explanatory footnotes by the three editors as well as a new introduction by Graham Rees.
