Review Carbohydrate Bioengineering (Progress in Biotechnology) / Elsevier Science:

Hardbound. The Carbohydrate Bioengineering Meeting held in Elsinore, Denmark, April 23-26, 1995, gathered 230 scientists, mostly from Europe, with interest in carbohydrate analysis and structure; carbohydrates in medicine and glycopathology; structure, function, application, and protein engineering of carbohydrate active enzymes; oligo- and polysaccharides of industrial interest; and production of carbohydrate containing new materials. The first chapters address glycoconjugates as modulatory and recognition molecules, structure determination using NMR and mass spectrometry, and microdialysis-chip enzyme-based sensors. Active site mutations coupled with crystal structures and synthetic substrate analogue interactions as well as new three-dimensional structures and binding domains for biotechnological applications are included in the chapters. Carbohydrate active enzymes turned out to be a predominant topic. The rapid development in glycobiology and gly.

Review Restriction Endonucleases / Springer:

Restriction enzymes are highly specific nucleases which occur ubiquitously among prokaryotic organisms, where they serve to protect bacterial cells against foreign DNA. Many different types of restriction enzymes are known, among them multi-subunit enzymes which depend on ATP or GTP hydrolysis for target site location. The best known representatives, the orthodox type II restriction endonucleases, are homodimers which recognize palindromic sequences, 4 to 8 base pairs in length, and cleave the DNA within or immediately adjacent to the recognition site. In addition to their important biological role (up to 10 % of the genomes of prokaryotic organisms code for restriction/modification systems!), they are among the most important enzymes used for the analysis and recombination of DNA. In addition, they are model systems for the study of protein-nucleic acids interactions and ? because of their ubiquitous occurence ? also for the understanding of the mechanisms of evolution.

Review Plant Membranes: A Biophysical Approach to Structure, Development and Senescence / Springer:

This book provides the reader with a multidisciplinary approach to an understanding of the function of various plant membrane categories as influenced on the one hand by their structural components and, on the other, by micro- and macro-environmental conditions. Specific topics discussed under relevant headings include ion channeling, plant hormone receptors and biophysical aspects of trans-membrane water movements. While the text essentially is a biophysical one, drawing on contemporary physical concepts, these are couched in terms - accompanied by a wealth of detailed diagrams - which are understandable to the average plant biologist. The material presented is divided into three parts. Part 1 is a comprehensive description of the various plant membrane components - lipids, proteins, sterols and water; Part 2 deals with both theoretical and applied aspects of plant membrane biophysics; Part 3, basing upon principles outlined in the previous sections describes `the membrane in action'. The processes in this part include the role of calcium in the membrane, phospholytic and lipolytic enzymes, membrane acclimation to chilling and freezing, tomoplast and plasma membranes of guard cell, and trans-membrane signal transduction in development and senescence.

Review Abiotic Stress Adaptation in Plants: Physiological, Molecular and Genomic Foundation / Springer:

Environmental insults such as extremes of temperature, extremes of water status as well as deteriorating soil conditions pose major threats to agriculture and food security. Employing contemporary tools and techniques from all branches of science, attempts are being made worldwide to understand how plants respond to abiotic stresses with the aim to help manipulate plant performance that will be better suited to withstand these stresses. The present book on abiotic stress is an attempt to search for possible answers to several basic questions related to plant responses towards abiotic stresses. This book presents a holistic view of the general principles of stress perception, signal transduction and regulation of gene expression. Further, chapters in this book analyze not only model systems but extrapolate interpretations obtained from models to crops. Lastly, discusses how stress-tolerant crop or model plants have been or are being raised through plant breeding and genetic engineering approaches. Twenty three chapters, written by international authorities, integrate molecular details with overall plant structure and physiology, in a text-book style, including key references.

Review Springer / Biochemistry of Scandium and Yttrium - Part 1: Physical and Chemical Fundamentals (BIOCHEMISTRY OF THE ELEMENTS Volume 13A) Edition: 1
Publication date: 1999-11-30
Dewey code: 572
List Price: $236.00
Price: $230.93

Review Biochemistry of Scandium and Yttrium - Part 1: Physical and Chemical Fundamentals (BIOCHEMISTRY OF THE ELEMENTS Volume 13A) / Springer:

Biochemistry of Scandium and Yttrium gathers together existing knowledge about scandium and yttrium from a wide variety of disciplines. Part 1 will present a comparative study of the physical and chemical properties of scandium and yttrium, looking at both their similarities and their differences. (Part 2 will address the biochemical aspects of these two elements, and the various medical and environmental applications. ) While these elements are relatively rare in nature, these books will show that they have unusual physical and chemical properties, and a disproportionate number of important applications. Improved analytical techniques have revealed that scandium and yttrium are present throughout living matter, even though only a relatively limited number of species have been analyzed so far. This fact of course has far-ranging implications for biological and environmental concerns. Part 1 also contains a discussion of the interactions of scandium and yttrium with molecules of biological interest, such as organic acids, carbohydrates, proteins, nucleotides, and other biologically active molecules. The major impacts of scandium and yttrium in science, technology, and medicine will be of interest to a wide variety of researchers, including geochemists, inorganic and organic chemists, clinical biochemists, and those specializing in environmental protection. Biochemistry of Scandium and Yttrium, Part 1 and Part 2 will be especially welcome because the last book published on the biochemistry of scandium appeared over 20 years ago, and the only book mentioning the biochemistry of yttrium came out in 1990.
