Review Collected Works of E. B. Tylor / Routledge/Thoemmes P:Sir Edward Burnett Tylor (1832-1917) is generally regarded as the founder of anthropology. The focus of his work was the application of scientific method to the study of human society and the development of culture. His work was based on an evolutionary model of ethnology, proposing that civilized society had originated from natural (rather that supernatural) processes that could be observed in "savage" or "uncivilized" contemporary societies. A tour of Mexico inspired his first work, Anahuac, or Mexico and the Mexicans (1861), a travelogue with ethnological observations of the 1855 trip. This was followed in 1865 by Researches into the Early History of Mankind, his first systematic ethnological look at the world. His two volume work of 1871, Primitive Culture, resulted in his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society and established him as the leading English anthropologist of his generation.

Review Early Sociology of Religion (Critical Concepts) / Routledge:The study of religion was of central importance in the emergence of modern sociology and anthropology, as is demonstrated by its significance in the writings of Emile Durkheim, Max Weber and Georg Simmel. European colonialism had given ample opportunities for the study of "primitive" cultures and their beliefs. In a social and intellectual environment which was increasingly secular and influenced by the norms of natural science these studies called into question the truth value not only of "primitive" religions, but also of Christianity. By the late nineteenth century the emerging social sciences appeared unanimous in their view that religion would not survive the forces of science, industrialization and economic individualism. The volumes in this set illustrate both how this position emerged, and how it was superseded by modern sociological and anthropological approaches which were more appreciative of the social value of religious practice. Durkheim is of obvious significance in this context, but the set also demonstrates the importance of the work of figures such as Andrew Lang and W. Robertson-Smith.
