Review Low Back Pain: New Research / Nova Biomedical Books:Low back pain is a common musculoskeletal disorder which affects the lumbar segment of the spine. It can be either acute, subacute or chronic in its clinical presentation. Typically, the symptoms of low back pain do show significant improvement within two to three months from its onset. In a significant number of individuals, low back pain tends to be recurrent in nature with a waxing and waning quality to it. In a small proportion of sufferers this condition can become chronic. Population studies show that back pain affects most adults at some stage in their life and accounts for more sick leave and disability than any other single medical condition. Review Back Injury Among Healthcare Workers: Causes, Solutions, and Impacts / CRC:Recently the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics calculated nearly 60,000 musculoskeletal injuries to healthcare workers resulting from heavy lifting during attempts to move patients. Often the nurses, aides, orderlies, and attendants who suffered permanent injuries were forced out of the profession, straining an already inadequate pool of workers and wasting valuable knowledge and ability. Back Injury Among Healthcare Workers: Causes, Solutions, and Impacts presents the latest research on this topic from an epidemiological point of view. The book highlights case studies from actual injured workers, along with analysis of how this problem is being addressed around the world. This in-depth study also discusses the legal and rehabilitative obstacles to returning to work, and suggests new policies for the safe lifting and moving of patients. The editors compile recommended solutions from leading names in the field, detailing how healthcare facilities can create safe work environments to prevent disabling back injuries.

Review A Prospective Study of Risk Factors for Low Back Disorders in Occupational Settings (Acta Biomedica Lovaniensia) / Leuven University Press:This is a Ph. D. thesis. In the working population, back disorders are the most frequently occurring disorder in the musculoskeletal system and an important reason for sick leave and permanent work inability. Back disorders have been estimated to be the most costly ailment of working adults. Despite numerous scientific investigations, their aetiology and risk factors are not well understood. The Belgian Low Back Cohort (BelCoBack) Project was designed for low back disorders in occupational settings. To minimize dropout, only workers with a tenured position or equivalent were included. Furthermore, to reduce the influence of age and of prior back pain episodes, participants had to be no older than 30 years at the time of intake and to have been free of episodes of low back pain of seven or more consecutive days during the twelve months before intake in the study.

Review Medical Management of Acute and Chronic Low Back Pain: Pain Research and Clinical Management Series, Volume 13 / Elsevier:Hardbound. The book summarizes the best available evidence of the management of acute and chronic low back pain. The evidence is presented in a clinically relevant order, to guide the practitioner through understanding the problem, taking a history, performing an examination, ordering investigations, and eventually prescribing treatment. Costs of low back pain (in dollars, diminishing quality of life and loss of skilled workforce) continue to escalate and become an increasing burden to governments, the private sector and society in general. The book challenges traditional dogmas, orthodox and alternative medicine, institutionalized practices and political correctness. At times the text is provocative and controversial with its thought-stimulating approach. The style reflects the authors' personae, is user friendly, and promotes communication. It is an excellent review for graduates and a clinical relevant text for students. The book is a must for.
