Review Sandman, Vol. 1: Preludes and Nocturnes (Sandman Collected Library) / Rebound by Sagebrush:

"Wake up, sir. We're here. " It's a simple enough opening line-althoughnot many would have guessed back in 1991 thatthis would lead to one of the most popular and critically acclaimed comics of the second half of the century. In Preludes and Nocturnes, Neil Gaiman weaves the story of a man interested in capturing the physical manifestation of Death but who instead captures the King of Dreams. By Gaiman's own admission there's a lot in this first collection that is awkward and ungainly-which is not to say there are not frequent moments of greatness here. The chapter "24 Hours" is worth the price of the book alone; it stands as one of the most chilling examples of horror in comics. And let's not underestimate Gaiman's achievement of personifying Death as a perky, overly cheery, cute goth girl! All in all, I greatly prefer the roguish breaking of new ground in this book to the often dull precision of the concluding volumes of the Sandman series. -Jim Pascoe "Wake up, sir. We're here. Review David Boring (Spanish Edition): David Boring (Bola Ocho/Eight Ball) / Public Square Books:

Meet David Boring: a nineteen-year-old security guard with a tortured inner life and an obsessive nature. When he meets the girl of his dreams, things begin to go awry: what seems too good to be true apparently is. And what seems truest in Boring's life is that, given the right set of circumstances (in this case, an orgiastic cascade of vengeance, humiliation and murder) the primal nature of humankind will come inexorably to the fore. For those interested in comic art's potential, Clowes's work offers exciting literary possibilities. Boring is Anything but. -Time Dan Clowes It's impossible to write about Daniel Clowes's work without using the word "ennui. " But his is a joyous ennui, if such a thing is possible, one that relishes the boredom of everyday life with a Zen enthusiasm. The title David Boring reflects his self-aware humor and captures the essence of an ordinary man living through a larger-than-life story. The main character lives with his best friend, Dot, in a large city, each looking for love and meaning. David in particular is trying to understand his father, whom he knows only through an obscure comic book called "The Yellow Streak. [+]
" Murder, obsession, sex, and war are all just distractions as he tries to construct a sensible portrait from the odd bits and pieces he finds in his travels. Clowes finds little miracles everywhere he looks-so many, in fact, that they seem hardly to interest him. This detachment perversely makes David Boring deeply compelling and worthy of serious attention from fans and newcomers alike. -Rob Lightner.

Review The Complete D. R. and Quinch (D.R. and Quinch) / Titan Books (UK):

From the subterrean depths of comics' most innovative mind comes a supremely deranged duo. Alan Moore (Watchmen, Promethea) and Alan Davis (Captain Britain, X-Men) are proud (and should be ashamed) to present D. R. & Quinch. Outrageous, unrestrained and heavily armed, college students D. R. & Quinch gleefully provide irredeemably poor role-modelling for today's youth. Comes complete with tips on death, extremely painful death and the art of total destruction. Wildly offensive tales of alien slime wars, deranged disaster movies, psychotic girlfriends and warped war veterans make for a volatile mix of malicious mayhem and deeply dark humour. Totally intense, manl.

Review The Complete Crumb Comics, Vol. 16: The Mid-1980s, More Years of Valiant Struggle / Fantagraphics Books:

The multiple award-winning The Complete Crumb Comics series—the definitive, comprehensive series reprinting the entirety of Crumb's oeuvre—enters the mid-1980s with this 16th volume, a period that many critics consider to be the richest of Crumb's career. Anchored by Crumb's contributions to the seminal anthology Weirdo, created and edited by Crumb, this volume focuses on the years 1985-1987 and includes the seminal "Jelly Roll Morton's Voodoo Curse," from Art Spiegelman's RAW magazine. Also featured are Crumb's gorgeous "Pioneers of Country Music" color portrait series, and such Weirdo classics as "The Religious Experience of Philip K. Dick," which chronicles the last years of the highly-regarded science-fiction writer who experienced an intense vision of the apocalypse and believed that he was possessed by the spirit of Elijah. Also included is Crumb's first issue of Hup, his acclaimed solo series of the 1980s and 1990s. The book is rounded out with a new cover and introduction by Crumb and a color section that includes rare album art for various jazz and blues greats, as well reproductions of his various comic book covers from this period. Crumb is the most revealing of all artists, and The Complete Crumb Comics leaves no stone unturned.

Review Big Guy & Rusty the Boy Robot (King Size B&W) (Big Guy & Rusty the Boy Robot) / Dark Horse:

Geof Darrow was awarded an Eisner for his spectacular artwork on 1995's hit miniseries, The Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot. For all the time and all the care he lavished on those pages, it's an award that was well-earned. When Geof first came into the Dark Horse offices with the finished pages for the two-issue series, we were all stunned by the detail. On these huge pages, there were minute details that we couldn't see clearly without a magnifying glass - things that would be lost in the reduction and hidden behind word balloons and coloring. At that point we knew we would have to publish an even-more-oversized edition of the series, in black-and-white and sans dialogue, so that everyone could see a better approximation of what we saw. This 11 3/4" x 15 3/4", softcover collection is the direct result of that first viewing, an attempt to show the comics world what we were privileged to see that first day. Reproduced here as large as possible, this action-packed adventure is presented in its "natural state," somewhat akin to watching a widescreen, laserdisc version of Scorsese's Raging Bull. All 65 pages of the original story are included, as well as a gallery featuring some rarely seen art. Even if it took you by storm the first time around, you can be assured that you ain't seen nothing yet!.
