Review Manly World of Lloyd Llewellyn / Fantagraphics Books:The Manly World of Lloyd Llewellyn (1986-1988), one of the earliest works of Eightball author Daniel Clowes, anticipated the 1990s rediscovery of lounge culture. The 31 stories collected here combine Dragnet with The Twilight Zone with Tales from the Crypt in a world filled with aliens, good-time girls, and cocktail-bar nihilism. The stories are hip and funny, with a good dose of wacky 1950s paranoia and the kind of tongue-in-cheek morality that characterized the old E. C. horror comics. The Lloyd Llewellyn stories also trace the development of Clowes's style as a comic artist, from the angular early pieces that show the influence of 1950s advertising style to the grotesque Robert Crumb-inspired style of the more recent work in Eightball. Clowes is one of the most gifted comic-book artists around, and the retro-chic world of Lloyd Llewellyn deserves to be seen by a new generation of readers.

Review Frank Miller's Sin City Library I / Dark Horse:The first Sin City volume of the Frank Miller library is an exceedingly handsome compilation of the first four books in Miller's gritty pulp-comic series: The Hard Goodbye, A Dame to Kill For, The Big Fat Kill, and That Yellow Bastard. These four stories-Marv's attempt to track down the killer of a perfect woman, Dwight's encounter with his ex-lover, Dwight's ill-fated attempt to teach a lesson to a brutal thug, and Hartigan's attempt to protect a young girl years after he saved her the first time-have the hallmarks that convinced Robert Rodriguez to turn three of them into the Sin City feature film: brutal violence, dangerous femmes fatale, mob leaders and dirty cops, and stark black-and-white art punctuated by the occasional splash of color. They all look great in these four oversized and heavyweight volumes of glossy paper. Also included are many of the color covers from the original Dark Horse comic books, though there's no supplemental art or creator commentary. Regardless, the presentation alone makes this a collection to savor. -David Horiuchi A collector's dream! Sin City fans the world over are clamoring for oversized archival editions of the legendary noir series from Frank Miller and Dark Horse is rising to the occasion! In the tradition of the EC Library, these deluxe hardcovers measure 9" x 12", are printed on high-quality paper stock, and collect each original series along with the color series-covers. The four hardcover volumes of set I are packaged in a handsomely designed slipcase - a long-awaited addition to the bookshelves of discriminating comics fans. This slipcase holds volumes one through four of Sin City, the hard-boiled stories that started it all! Never before seen at this size, the now-infamous Marv, Dwight, Gail, Miho, Hartigan, Nancy, and the Yellow Bastard will transport you to Sin City and show you the bloody lives they lead. [+]

Review The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Vol. 1: The Absolute Edition / Wildstorm:Proving that mainstream comics could be infused with past literary/cultural ideals and still be bestsellers, the America's Best Comics imprint took the dilapidated superhero genre and created three vastly entertaining hybrids with Tom Strong, Promethea and Top Ten. Now, a stunning coup de grace is delivered with this masterful pairing of Victorian adventure fiction's greatest characters and the old war-horse of the super-group. With the stunning The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, it would be no exaggeration to say that Alan Moore has produced a near-perfect piece of adventure fiction that is clever, literate, rich with excitement and hard to put down. It's 1898 and at the behest of M, the mysterious head of the secret Service, Campion Bond is dispatched to procure the services of Miss Mina Murray (nee Harker), adventurer Allan Quartermain, "Science-Pirate" Captain Nemo, Henry Jekyll (and his monstrous alter ego) and Hawley Griffin (a. k. a. the Invisible Man). Together, they must combat an insidious threat that will decide supremacy of the London skies, but their success may unleash a far greater threat. With no shortage of action, Moore and O' Neill sustain a high level of suspense, intrigue, mystery and terrific wit that all contribute to an indispensable read. O'Neill's art, so memorable in Marshal Law, produces a London filled with vivid, magnificent architecture and a malevolent atmosphere ripe with thrills and danger. [+]

Review A Voyage to Arcturus / Savoy Books:A Voyage to Arcturus is a novel by the Scottish writer David Lindsay. First published in 1920, it combines fantasy, philosophy and science fiction in an exploration of the nature of good and evil and their relationship with existence. It has been described by the critic and philosopher Colin Wilson as the "greatest novel of the twentieth century" and was a central influence on C. S. Lewis's Space Trilogy. David Lindsay (1874-1945) was a successful British businessman who turned to writing after the first World War. Unfortunately, his most famous work, A Voyage to Arcturus, proved to be a commercial disaster at the time of its release, and he spent the rest of his writing career struggling to achieve commercial success, with little result. A Voyage to Arcturus is a remarkable book on many levels. The Encyclopedia of Fantasy calls it "dazzlingly brilliant" and a "masterpiece. " Without doubt, it is the one work for which Lindsay will be remembered. [+]
It is an allegorical fantasy, an adventure novel, an interplanetary romance, and an exploration of humanity and sexuality from a time when such topics were largely taboo in the popular press. It provides more than a few fascinating insights into human nature through social Darwinism. And, although Philip Jose Farmer is largely credited with the introduction of sex into science fiction with his groundbreaking 1940s pulp SF story, "The Lovers," Lindsay navigated these waters decades earlier.
