Review Manuscripts and their Makers: (Studies in Medieval and Early Renaissance Art History) / H. Miller Publishers:This two-volume publication examines in depth the organization, craftsmen, clients and products of the commercial book trade in Paris from 1200 to 1500, a time when the city was the uncontested centre of commercial manuscript production in Northern Europe. The first volume deals with the establishment of the Paris book trade, how it functioned and how it changed, always as a closeknit community of families whose lives are reconstructed from archives and from the manuscripts they produced. These chapters are documented with maps, diagrams, genealogies and illustrations of the manuscripts involved. The second volume contains a register of some 1200 short biographies of members of the medieval book trade in Paris, including scribes and illuminators such as Master Honoré and Jean Pucelle. This important study, based on the series of Lyell Lectures in Bibliography recently given at the University of Oxford, makes a significant contribution to the history of art, the history of French Literature, the history of the book and the history of medieval Paris.

Review PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE (International Library of Philosophy) / Routledge:The philosophy of science is today a major area in philosophy. The volumes in this set, published between 1923 and 1955 show the development of this important field in the first half of the 20th century. "Scientific Thought" , based on a course of lectures by the famous philosopher C. D. Broad in 1920-21, looks at many scientific theories, such as the theory of relativity, space, time and motion and mathematical physics. "The Metaphysical Foundations of Modern Science," published in 1924, locates the main assumptions of modern science and compares them with those in medieval thought. "Biological Principles" looks at the general problems of the theory of knowledge and difficulties with biological knowledge.

Review A Comparative Edition of the Syriac Gospels: Aligning the Sinaiticus, Curetonianus, Peshitta and Harklean Versions (Etudes Sur Le Judaisme Medieval) (Etudes Sur Le Judaisme Medieval) / Brill Academic Publishers:The three surviving versions of the Gospels in Syriac are of considerable importance both for Biblical and for Semitic Studies. The Old Syriac, preserved in two manuscripts, is one of the earliest translations of the Greek Gospels; the Peshi?ta remains to this day the official Bible of the Syriac Churches, while the ?arklean is a masterpiece of mirror-translation. This new edition conveniently provides for the first time the text of all three versions together. The texts of the two Old Syriac manuscripts, the Peshi?ta and the ?arklean are drawn from the best sources and have been carefully aligned so that their inter-relationship can immediately be seen and studied. The volumes, which include the first edition of the ?arklean Gospels for some 200 years (prepared by Dr. Andreas J]ckel), will prove an invaluable resource for both Biblical and for Semitic scholarship.
