Review Carpentry and Building in Late Imperial China: A Study of the Fifteenth-Century Carpenter's Manual Lu Ban Jing (Sinica Leidensia, Vol 23) / Brill Academic Publishers:This volume deals with the world of carpenters and joiners in late Imperial China, discussing both the technical and the religious and ritual aspects of building. It uses the 15th-century carpenter's manual, "Lu Ban jing" as its source. The first part of the book examines building materials, the life of labourers and craftsmen, and the process or building a house. Subjects included are the choice of favourable measurements, the ritual of raising the ridge pole, and the complete, annotated translation of the "Lu Ban jing", preceded by a bibliographic essay. The sections on furniture construction are especially important for the art historian. The book includes a facsimile of the illustrated earliest edition of the "Lu Ban jing", dating from 1600.

Review Catalogue of the Gandhara Sculpture in the British Museum. / Art Media Resources:A long-awaited catalog to the British Museum's large and important collection of Gandhara sculpture. Formed mainly from early unsystematic acquisitions by soldiers garrisoning the Northwest Frontier and further enriched from some of the first excavations, the British Museum's collection is - with the collections at Peshawar, Lahore, Taxila, Chandigarh, Calcutta, Paris, Rome and Berlin - one of the principal sources for widespread academic activity that Gandhara studies have become. This catalog is the first publication by a museum of so large a body of the material: besides cult images and reliefs, it also includes reliquaries. After a substantial introduction, 680 objects, all illustrated, are individually described, where possible with comparisons and literary references. The book also contains an exhaustive bibliography, as well as concordances and indexes.

Review Philip Guston Works on Paper / Hatje Cantz:Painter Philip Guston's return to figuration in the late 1960s was plotted and rehearsed in his drawing practice, in which he veered between what he referred to as "pure drawing" (abstract) and figurative drawing (a shoe, a chair, a nail, an open book, a hooded head). As he groped his way into this strange and clunky vocabulary, Guston discovered an incredible world awaiting him, and realized, as he put it, that "I wanted to tell stories!"Guston's drawing was also a vehicle for collaboration-with poets such as Clark Coolidge and Bill Berkson-and for satire-the Poor Richard series. His draftsmanship betrays such early influences as the cartoons of Frink and George Herriman, perhaps instances of the "impure" art that flooded back into his practice after he abandoned abstraction. With a selection of about 100 drawings, mostly from the artist's estate, Philip Guston: Works on Paper tracks the evolution of this major American artist's drawing from the 1940s to 1980.
