Review Pele / Gloria Books, Ovais Naqvi:

Pelé is the greatest soccer player in the history of the sport. Thirty years after his retirement, he is a unique global ambassador for the beautiful game and a living testament to where sporting brilliance, determination and humanity can take you. The giant, limited edition 'Pelé' is a genuine piece of sporting memorabilia. Limited to only 2,500 copies globally, each is individually numbered and personally hand-signed by Pelé. Covered and embossed in Italian fine silk and presented in ultra-large format, 'Pelé' is the ultimate testament to soccer's greatest legend. Gloria has spent two years creating the greatest ever limited edition celebration, which includes an introduction and exclusive new writings from the man himself. 'Pelé' is lavishly illustrated with over 1,700 images, many never previously published together with classic and newly commissioned work from some of soccer's greatest living writers. The images and text cover every key moment of Pelé's life from early childhood to the modern day. Most of the material has been collected from unseen, personal and library archives in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janiero, London, New York and Paris including rarely seen art by Andy Warhol. 'Pelé' was published in summer 2006 to global acclaim. [+]
It has been described by the Daily Telegraph in the UK as 'the most comprehensive book on [soccer] football there has ever been'. Sports Illustrated said 'Every page presents a new treasure'. It is the definitive book about the sport and the central figure within it over the last half century.

Review James Fee: 1993-2000 / St Anns Pr:

James Fee has been taking photographs for most of his life, and in the past decade he has developed a large and loyal following of critics and enthusiasts across the world of fine art photography. The nineties were a prolific decade for Fee, who has in the last ten years produced several compelling series of work, all of which are documented in this essential new monograph. Presented here are the many black and white photographs of American icons and imagery that are thematically connected by Fee's obsession with the decline and destruction of the America that he knew as a young man: we see his series of New York imagery, including the Chrysler building and the Brooklyn Bridge; pictures of the crumbling Penn State penitentiary, Beat inspired series of photographs of the American road; a distinctive and unique series of nude imagery; as well as his innovative collaborations with multimedia artist George Herms. Finally, presented here for the first time is a unique series of photographs taken on the South Pacific Island of Pelelui, a series which offers a glimpse at a long, very personal project for Fee, inspired by the photographs his father took while posted on the island during the Second World War. Deluxe Limited Edition of 200 copies, each slipcased with at portfolio of 3 original 8 x 10 inch prints, signed and numbered by James Fee. Hardcover, 11 x 13 inches, 175 pages, 68 color and 67 tritone illustrations. Exhibition Schedule: Los Angeles Center for Photographic Studies, December 2000-Januray 2001, Los Angeles; University of Connecticut William Benton Museum of Art, March-April 2001, Storrs, Connecticut ; Debra Hermdinger Gallery, April 2001, San Francisco; Craig Krull Gallery, July 2001, Santa Monica.

Review Urban Forms and Colonial Confrontations: Algiers Under French Rule / University of California Press:

During its long history as the French colonial city par excellence, Algiers was the site of recurrent conflicts between colonizer and colonized. Through architecture and urban forms confrontations were crystallized, cultural identities were defined, and social engineering programs were shaped and challenged. In this pathbreaking book, Zeynep Çelik reads the city of Algiers as the site of social, political, and cultural conflicts during the 132 years of French occupation and argues that architecture and urban forms are integral components of the colonial discourse. Algiers' city planning, based on what Çelik calls "the trial-and-error" model of French colonial urbanism, included the fragmentation of the casbah, ambitious Beaux Arts schemes to create European forms of housing, master plans inspired by high modernism, and comprehensive regional plans. Eventually a dramatic housing shortage led all planning efforts to be centered on the construction of large-scale residential enclaves. French architects based their designs for domestic space on the concept of the "traditional house," itself an interdisciplinary colonial concept intertwined with the discourse on Algerian women. Housing also offered the French colonizers a powerful presence in a country where periodic resistance to the occupation eventually culminated in a seven-year war of liberation and an end to French rule. Extensively illustrated with photographs, maps, and housing plans, Çelik's book presents a fascinating example of colonial urban planning. Algiers comes alive as a city that reflected all the conflicts of colonialism while embracing innovation.
