Review Taschen / Terryworld Artist's Edition (#1) Creator: Terry Richardson
Edition: Artist's ed.
Publication date: 2004-12-01
Dewey code: 771
Price: $700.00

Review Terryworld Artist's Edition (#1) / Taschen:

Who took 1970's porn esthetic and made it fashion chic? Terry Richardson. Who made the trailer park trendy and the tractor hat de rigueur? Richardson again. Who's equally at home in Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Purple and Vice? Our boy Terry. Who uses his fashion money to fund an X-rated website? Yes, Richardson. And who can't resist getting his clothes off and jumping in front of his own lens? Well, that would be Terry Richardson as well. Porn stars, supermodels, transsexuals, hillbillies, friends, pets, and celebrities all do for his lens what they'll do for no other. And if anyone ever wonders why they did it, just blame it on Terryworld, where taboos are null and void, and fashion finds sex a perfect fit. The Artist's Edition comes in a clear plastic case with 4 personally selected limited-edition Terryprints and a Terrybear (a little teddy bear with Terry's face on it).

Review Visionaire #30: The Game - USA / Visionaire Pub:

With a new theme and format for each new issue, Visionaire stretches the imagination and boundaries of what an art and fashion publication can be. Issue #30: The Game takes as its inspiration the Louis Vuitton Cup, the qualifying round of sailboat races for the America's Cup, and the first major competition of the new millennium. Mirroring the Cup's format of entrants from seven different countries, Visionaire assembled 'teams' of artists, photographers, and image makers to represent each of the Cup's participating countries. Accordingly there are seven different versions of this issue, one per country. Each version comes in the form of a puzzle: sixteen cubes when placed in the correct configuration form one of the six different images. The cubes along with a book of all forty-two images are packaged inside a silk-screened Lucite case created by Louis Vuitton. Among the participating artists are: for the USA, Alex Katz, Nan Goldin, Mary Ellen Mark, Steven Klein, David LaChapelle, and Elizabeth Peyton; for Australia, Tracey Moffatt; for France, Serge Lutens and Karl Lagerfeld; for Italy, Maurizio Catalan and Francesco Clemente; for Japan, Syd Mead and Takashi Murakami; for Spain, Pedro Almodovar and Juan Gatti; and for Switzerland, Raymond Meier, Pipilotti Rist, and Francois Berthoud. Described as the "couture version of magazines," this highly collectible publication-as-art-object pulls together the design, fashion, and art world's most important image makers.

Review Restoration Stage Controversy (History of British Theatre) / Routledge/Thoemmes P:

With the restoration, a new vitality sprang up in English theatre. Theatres were redesigned, actors began forming their own companies and women appeared on stage for the first time. However, the alleged licentiousness and profanity of dramatic works invoked a new Puritanical fury. At the centre of this debate was Jeremy Collier who dealt sharply with offending dramatists, regardless of their wit or prestige. This set charts the turbulent period of English restoration drama and its fight against Puritanical moralizing and censorship.

Review Jenny Saville & Glen Luchford: Closed Contact / Gagosian Gallery:

After having observed the operations of reconstructive surgery and aesthetic surgery, acclaimed figurative painter Jenny Saville was eager to express the violence and anesthetized pain of this experience in her own work. She and fashion photographer Glenn Luchford thus began an artistic collaboration that captures the full range of color, tonality, and topography of live flesh, in large photographic tableaux that portray Saville's own body. Distortions confront and coerce the viewer into an examination of his or her own body and the grotesqueries and beauties inherent within; the images likewise recall biological specimens preserved, disembodied, and disfigured. The collusion of the art and fashion worlds has produced many hybrids in recent years, yet none perhaps none as intensely striking as this series.
