Review The Devonshire Collection of Italian Drawing: Roman and Neapolitan/Venetian and North Italian Schools/Tuscan and Umbrian Schools/Bolognese and Emili (Devonshire Collection) / Phaidon Press:The collection of Old Master drawings at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire, home of the Dukes of Devonshire, ranks as one of the great princely collections of Europe. Formed in the 18th-century by the first, second and third Dukes, the collection contains sheets by the great masters of every artistic school. Alongside the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle, it constitutes the finest privately owned group of such drawings in Britain. This four volume set represents the catalogue raisonne of the collection - which has never previously been catalogued - which contains 1000 drawings of the Italian School from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. It includes full scholarly apparatus, a study of the formation of the collection and numerous reattributions and discoveries. The catalogue includes works by artists such as Leonardo, Raphael, Filippo Lippi, Botticelli, Titian and Mantegna.

Review Japanese Flower and Plant Arrangements (Antique) / Japan:I can't read Japanese. Perhaps someone can translate this for me. But this is such a great collectible, a real keeper, and I've never seen a book like it. The arrangements are art, and obviously involve culture, nature, form, statement, and design. The book reads back to front. All text is in Japanese. There are hundreds of photos in either a green, blue or tan tint of unusual and beautiful flower arrangements, with accompanying stands, pots, containers, trays, baskets and decorative items. There are also separate photos of women in traditional dress, and many quaint drawings of twig and flower arrangement shapes. The flower and twig arrangements are quite unusual and beautiful. Some of these drawings appear to be ads. [+]
The fount of collector detail is amazing. I think this must date from the 1930's, but could be earlier. Great deal, recommended.

Review Paolo Roversi: Studio / Steidl/Dangin:Paolo Roversi is known internationally for his romantic, intense, and ethereal fashion images and portraits, photographs that quiver on the edge of their own seemingly fragile existence. A typical Roversi picture appears as if captured in the process of becoming-it develops on the page before our very eyes or, depending on perspective, it might simply vanish into the ether. Since 1980 Roversi has worked primarily with 8-by-10 inch Polaroids, and rarely on location. Studio is a milestone in his burgeoning bibliography. Designed as a series of 60 gatefolds, at first glance the book appears to be a collection of empty pages. The experience of looking is akin to that of peeling away the leaf from a Polaroid-out of the blackness an image is revealed as if by magic. In images that represent nearly two decades of work, the collection offers a self-portrait of the artist and a window into the place where he creates his art. These photographs are a mix of both the published and the highly personal, but all have the intimacy engendered by that place where Roversi feels most at home.

Review Neo Rauch Works 1994-2002: The Leipzinger Volkszeitung Collection / Woodstocker Books:The "Coolest name in art" is how Telepolis magazine referred to German abstract artist Neo Rauch. The subject of articles in the New Yorker, Frieze and Artforum for art combining the influences of Soviet propaganda art, Max Beckmann and American Pop, he has been shown in galleries in several American cities and throughout Europe. His large paintings and drawings of the human figure and people at work have earned him the Vincent van Gogh Biennial Award for Contemporary Art and the Leipzig Art Award. Rauch delights in spatial disjunctions where a bucolic landscape of massive industrial buildings and airplanes on a runway might be juxtaposed with a cut-out of a horse in the act of leaping out of the canvas. Uniformed men in an assembly line attend to indefinable jobs at unrecognizable machines. Is Rauch saying, with his figural depictions, that our inexhaustible endeavors are absurd? Some critics find in his tough vision and melding of realism and surrealism an expression not only about the ambiguities of contemporary life but the mystery of human existence. This catalogue was published by the Honolulu Academy of Arts, the first American museum to give Rauch a one-person exhibition.
