Review I'll Be Watching You: Inside the Police 1980-83 (Taschen Artists Edition) / Taschen:

The insider: The Police on tour photographed by guitarist Andy Summers Just announced: The Police Reunion Tour starts in Summer 2007! In the early 1980s, The Police went on tour accompanied by a photographer who documented the band behind the scenes in a series of candid and striking black and white photos. This talented photographer also happened to be the band's guitarist, Andy Summers. Yes, it's true?the man responsible for the guitar lick from ?Every Breath You Take? was not only the backbone of one of the most popular bands of all time, he also possessed a visual gift for composition and mood that allowed him to capture the spirit of The Police better than anyone else could have. This book, somewhere between photojournalism and an illustrated diary, follows The Police around the globe between 1980 and 1983. From the American West to Australia to Japan, Summers recorded not only the band members rehearsing and partying?the proverbial sex, drugs, and rock and roll?he also photographed fans, landscapes, still lifes, and passersby in a reportage style reminiscent of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank. Containing over 600 photos and filled with diary-style entries, I?ll Be Watching You is a sumptuous volume beating with musical energy, nostalgia, and atmospheric beauty. A must for photo buffs and Police fans alike. Collector's edition features: ? Limited to 1500 copies, each numbered and signed by the artist ? Packaged in a slipcase ? Contains over 600 photographs personally selected from the photographer's archive of over 25,000 negatives (1980-83) ? Most photos are previously unpublished, and many of them have never even been printed prior to this project Highlights include: ?Rehearsals and recording sessions with band-mates Sting and Stewart Copeland ? Exclusive back-stage and on-stage footage from concerts including Plaza de Toros (Barcelona, 1980), Budokan (Tokyo, 1981), Wembley Stadium (London, 1981), and Shea Stadium (New York, 1983) ? Inside the tour busses, limousines, helicopters, private planes, parties, and hotel rooms ? Behind the scenes on music video shoots, at press conferences, and in-store appearances ? Life on the road with other bands including The Go-Go?s, XTC, and The B-52's ? Rain-soaked train windows, trashed hotel rooms, island retreats, over-capacity stadiums, and thousands of screaming, singing, sobbing, fans Countries covered in the book: America, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom The artist: While Andy Summers is best known as the guitarist of The Police (1977-86), he has since forged a successful and acclaimed solo career with contemporary instrumental music that, like his work with Sting and Stewart Copeland, draws on his love of jazz, world, classical music, and his fascination with creating sonic textures. His post-Police years have produced more than two dozen solo albums, soundtracks, and collaborations, plus hundreds of international concerts, and induction to both the Guitar Player Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Summers's parallel passion for photography has led him to document subjects ranging from rural communities throughout Southeast Asia to timeless noir-style street scenes in cities around the world. [+]
His photographs have been shown in galleries in New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Amsterdam, Paris and London, and his books include Throb (1983), the Ralph Gibson collaboration Light Strings: Impressions of the Guitar (2004), and the memoir One Train Later (2006).

Review The Death and Return of the Author: Criticism and Subjectivity in Barthes, Foucault, and Derrida (Modern Scottish Writers) / Columbia University Press:

In contemporary thought, the death of the author has assumed a significance comparable only to the death of God in the 19th century. This work offers an explanation of anti-authorialism and shows how, even taken in its own terms, the attempt to abolish the author is fundamentally misguided and philosophically untenable. This updated edition features a section challenging Derrida's reading of Plato as the founder of logocentrism; an epilogue which deals with the politics of authorship and issues of technology; and an updated bibliography.

Review Memoirs of a Professional Cad / Scarecrow Pr:

The lingering image of George Sanders, kept alive by his appearances in dozens of famous films, is that of the cultured cad. Sanders won an Oscar for his performance as the acerbic, haughty drama critic in "All About Eve" and gave good accounts of himself as a cad in "Rebecca" and "The Moon and Sixpence", but mostly he ambled through more than a hundred films with a strangely appealing insouciance that fascinated even those with whom he worked. Perhaps it was the way he spoke-like a well-tuned cello voicing aphorisms. He was a witty man, and his autobiography, "The Memoirs of a Professional Cad", published in 1960, is one of the most amusing and literate books ever written by an actor. Veteran broadcaster and film historian Tony Thomas has filled in the rest of the George Sanders story by supplying an introduction, a lengthy epilogue, and a filmography of Sanders's 110 films.

Review Umberto Eco (SAGE Masters in Modern Social Thought series) / Sage Publications Ltd:

Umberto Eco is arguably best known for his novel The Name of the Rose yet there is much more to him than simply being an exemplary novelist. Semiotician, literary and media critic, philosopher and historian, Umberto Eco is one of the greatest and most original thinkers working today. He has contributed to many fields and is one of a handful of writers who can claim to be a key public intellectual in Europe. This has made it extraordinarily difficult for commentators to place him in the Western tradition of social thought. This is especially so, because there is a playful quality in his work, exemplified above all by his use of skills and techniques from semiotics, the philosophy of language, medieval life and thought and aesthetics and techniques that he employed to great affect in The Name of the Rose. He has also made seminal contributions in thinking on postmodern developments in culture and epistemology. This collection provides an unrivalled overview of his writings and includes a selection from considerations of his contribution to semiotics, literary theory, philosophy of language, the analysis of fiction and narratives, his novels, his critiques of mass culture and communication and his contributions to the theory of laughter, politics and ethics. The result is the most complete assessment of Eco's contribution and its impact on social, cultural and critical thought. Mike Gane is Professor of Sociology at the University of Loughborough; Nicholas Gane is Senior Lecturer in Sociology and Communications at Brunel University, London.

Review Carouschka's Tickets / Testadora:

"Carouschka's Tickets" is a design object, an artist's book, and a catalogue of the ultimate emphemera of 30 years worth of travel. It reproduces over 1600 tickets from international airlines to intracity buses collected by the Swedish designer and architect Carouschka Strejffert which together present a portrait of contemporary migration: of people across borders, and of commuters across town, while at the same time celebrating the graphic design of travel. Remarkably designed in a large-format with French folds, this book is printed beautifully, accurately conveying the feel and texture of each ticket. "Carouschka's Ticket" is a singular project by a unique artist that speaks to the overwhelming prevelance of travel in our world, and the signifying power of graphic design in contemporary culture. 1600 color. 8. 7 x 13. 4 in. Carouschka's Tickets is at once a museum of objects, a record of movement, a catalog of graphic form and typography, and a concentrated experience of travel. Hundreds of plane tickets, train tickets, airline baggage tags, bus transfers, taxicab receipts, parking permits, and other bits of travel ephemera from 70 countries are displayed against rich fields of color. [+]
Travelers' thoughts and overheard comments are translated and interspersed between the tickets alongside their original-language versions, comments that range from the banal ("tea?") to the personal ("his wife is bound to notice something soon") to the profound ("alas, my spirit, your wanderings have been my home in this life"). This beautifully designed, printed, and bound volume makes real not only the feelings of travel but also of life itself, in subtle, quiet, and brilliant ways. With each page, the book is more an art object, rather than a gathering of art objects, a moving narrative masquerading as a catalog of tickets. -Juliette Cezzar.

Review The Flight of Icarus: Artisan Autobiography in Early Modern Europe / Stanford University Press:

Exploring autobiographical texts written by European urban craftsmen from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries, this wide-ranging book studies memoirs, diaries, family chronicles, travel narratives, and other forms of personal writings from Spain, France, Italy, Germany, and England. In the process, it considers the motivations of the authors, the changing forms and emphases of artisan narratives, and, more generally, the significance of written self-expression in early modern popular culture. By analyzing reading and writing as practices laden with social meaning, this work aims to illuminate the changing role of the lower classes and other groups considered marginal in the history of literature and literacy. It uncovers an Icarian logic by which writing about the self and ones immediate and private world developed as a complex response to widely shared expectations regarding the cultural and political subordination of craftsmen and others relegated to the margins of public life and discourse.

Review Robert Maillart: Builder, Designer, and Artist / Cambridge University Press:

This comprehensive biography traces the life and works of Robert Maillart, one of the most important engineers and designers of the twentieth century. His career developed around a central issue of modern technological society: the debate between two antithetical views of engineering opposing applied science, which relied on general mathematical theories for understanding structures against design, which Maillart championed. Maillart considered structures not merely works of utility but also as works of art. As utilitarian objects, he created a series of innovations of lasting significance. Aesthetically, Maillart shaped his three innovations in concrete to create surprising and often stunning new forms. Providing an analysis of these innovations, this biography also connects Maillart's aesthetic ideas with the private and professional context in which he worked.
