Review University of Rochester Press / The Illuminating Mind in American Photography:: Stieglitz, Strand, Weston, Adams Publication date: 2001-06-15
Dewey code: 770.92273

Review The Illuminating Mind in American Photography:: Stieglitz, Strand, Weston, Adams / University of Rochester Press:

The Illuminating Mind looks at the ideas, images and lives of four major twentieth century American photographers: Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946), Paul Strand (1890-1976), Edward Weston (1886-1958) and Ansel Adams (1902-1984). Largely because of their efforts, Americans came to accept photography as a fine art. This book examines the lives of these four photographers within the context of their times, sketching not only their contributions to American modernism, but also their struggles with epistemological and representational questions that echoed throughout American culture. They were all interested in the relationships between the artist and his subject, the knower and the known, the mind and its objects. For them, photography was not passive transcription of the outer world; instead, it is an exploratory process in which the artist interogates and probes that world. Thus they regarded photography as a creative art in which the mind illuminates its subjects, and they believed that a photograph is constituted as much by the artist's contributions as by the subject's trace. Drawing upon rarely used archival manuscripts and forgotten publication, The Illuminating Mind uses a biographical perspective to reveal these artists' unrecognized psychological intricacies, as well as the interrelationships of their creative lives and expressive themes. Review My Losing Season (Autographed Edition) / Nan A. Talese:

PAT CONROY—AMERICA’S MOST BELOVED STORYTELLER—IS BACK!“I was born to be a point guard, but not a very good one. There was a time in my life when I walked through the world known to myself and others as an athlete. It was part of my own definition of who I was and certainly the part I most respected. When I was a young man, I was well-built and agile and ready for the rough and tumble of games, and athletics provided the single outlet for a repressed and preternaturally shy boy to express himself in public. [+]
I lost myself in the beauty of sport and made my family proud while passing through the silent eye of the storm that was my childhood. ” So begins Pat Conroy’s journey back to 1967 and his startling realization “that this season had been seminal and easily the most consequential of my life. ” The place is the Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, that now famous military college, and in memory Conroy gathers around him his team to relive their few triumphs and humiliating defeats. In a narrative that moves seamlessly between the action of the season and flashbacks into his childhood, we see the author’s love of basketball and how crucial the role of athlete is to all these young men who are struggling to find their own identity and their place in the world. In fast-paced exhilarating games, readers will laugh in delight and cry in disappointment. But as the story continues, we gradually see the self-professed “mediocre” athlete merge into the point guard whose spirit drives the team. He rallies them to play their best while closing off the shouts of “Don’t shoot, Conroy” that come from the coach on the sidelines. For Coach Mel Thompson is to Conroy the undermining presence that his father had been throughout his childhood. And in these pages finally, heartbreakingly, we learn the truth about the Great Santini. In My Losing Season Pat Conroy has written an American classic about young men and the bonds they form, about losing and the lessons it imparts, about finding one’s voice and one’s self in the midst of defeat. And in his trademark language, we see the young Conroy walk from his life as an athlete to the writer the world knows him to be.

Review The King Is Dead / KATCO MEDIA:

It was another routine day for Robert Kendall as he reported to work at the Memphis Funeral Home. But, early in the afternoon of this mundane day, Kendall’s life would forever change. Elvis Presley-the undisputed king of rock & roll lay dead on an autopsy table at Baptist’s Memorial Hospital in Memphis. Kendall would learn, in fairly short order, that he would be in charge of arranging the funeral for the deceased singer-idol. Soon, the call would come from Elvis’ personal friend, Joe Esposito, summoning him to the mansion to discuss the arrangements. Elvis’ father, Vernon Presley, would be calling the shots. But what would he want? “THE KING IS DEAD” is a compelling minute-by-minute narrative of a facet of the Elvis Presley story NEVER before told. This book is based on the memoirs of Elvis’ Funeral Director, Robert Kendall. For the first time, readers and Elvis enthusiasts alike will learn. [+]
• The ordeal Kendall went through to secure Elvis’ $8,000 coffin, identitical to the one his mother was buried in • Who attended the private viewing at Graceland and intimate details of Elvis’ eulogy and services. • The orders given, personally, by Vernon Presley for Elvis’ funeral in a private, late-night meeting at Graceland on the evening of the singer’s death. • The details of the last moments 9-year old Lisa Marie Presley would spend with her father’s body at Graceland. • How the SWAT team descended on the Memphis Funeral Home to protect Elvis’ dead body.

Review Lives of the Great Romantics II / Pickering & Chatto Publishers:

In this second collection of biographical accounts of Romantic writers, the characters of Keats, Coleridge and Scott are recalled by their contemporaries, offering insights into their lives and writings, as well as into the art of 19th-century biography. Keats died at the age of 25. Memoir writers attempted to capture the tragedy of what they saw as thwarted promise. The memoirs in this collection explore the Romantic cult of the poet, sharing Keats's own reluctance to turn his private life into public art. Coleridge, a famous theologian and drug-user, was seen by his contemporaries both as a degenerate and as "the sage of Highgate", a defender of the Established Church. The reminiscences collected here struggle to present a clear, coherent image of their subject, whether heroic or disreputable. More recent reappraisals of Sir Walter Scott's work accompany a revived curiousity about his private personality and public persona. Memoirs selected here include material from a biography written by his son-in-law J. G. Lockhart, as well as from the many dissident and more informal recollections of his varied literary acquaintances.

Review Continuum International Publishing Group / The Love There That's Sleeping: The Art And Spirituality of George Harrison Publication date: 2006-11
Dewey code: 782.42166092
Price: $70.00

Review The Love There That's Sleeping: The Art And Spirituality of George Harrison / Continuum International Publishing Group:

From his days as the "quiet Beatle" - a tag he quite disliked - to his immensely successful and critically admired solo career, George Harrison produced one of the most memorable bodies of music in modern times. His "Something" and "Here Comes the Sun" can certainly lay claim to being the best offerings on The Beatles' Abbey Road, while his 1970 album "All Things Must Pass" introduced new musical styles to rock and roll. Harrison was the pioneer in making mainstream rock a vehicle for religious convictions. In this respect, he is a forerunner of bands such as U2 and Creed. People often criticized him for being preachy or didactic. Reviewers over the years exhibited either an anxious disinclination to say much about his evangelistic lyrics or showed a condescending tendency to dismiss them. His devotional language was not their language. They regularly thought him sanctimonious and full of irrelevant religious platitudes. Allison's book views Harrison's religious bent as his most interesting trait. Harrison should be admired for having something distinctive to say, and for saying it while knowing that many would not understand and that others who might understand might not be sympathetic. [+]
He had the courage of his convictions, to sing to the public what he sang to himself in his heart. Allison traces Harrison's religious pilgrimage from Liverpool Roman Catholicism to a brand of philosophical Hinduism. He sorts through Harrison's musical corpus - through its mixed bag of fragmentary feelings, religious poetry, secular love songs, perceptions of the world, and anxieties about life, to interpret what matters most to Harrison. In short, this is a book about Harrison's religious sentiments as they surface in his songs.

Review Django Reinhardt / Hal Leonard Publishing Corporation:

No European jazz musician has so enchanted the word as Django Reinhardt, the gypsy guitarist whose recording with Stephane Grappelly and the Hot Club of France have meant "The Thirties" to several generations of listeners, influencing musicians as far afield as Larry Coryell, Leon Redbone, Eddy Lang, and Charlie Christian. This is the only full-length study of Django ever published in English, an unforgettable portrait of a wild and independent figure who never learned to read or write (friends forged his autographs), exasperated those people who lived by schedules, gambled away a week's salary in a night, but who played the guitar like no one before or since. The distinguished French critic Charles Delaunay, who knows more about Django than anyone alive, here provides not only the familiar outline of a life-the childhood travels in gypsy caravans, the fire that left Django with a crippled hand, the legendary temper and generosity-but he also collected scores of anecdotes about the sensitivity and musical gifts that were the basis for Django's appearance as a character in Jean Cocteau's Les Enfants Terribles. Who else but Django could charm his way out of a jail sentence by serenading the police officer with his guitar? The comprehensive discography at the back of the book completes Delaunay's picture of this "misrepresented and fantastic creature, at once so captivating and so divorced from the contentions of his age. ".

Review The Brontes: A Life in Letters / Overlook TP:

Upon its publication in 1995, Juliet Barker's The Brontës was deemed a monumental achievement that set a new standard in literary biography; it garnered rave reviews and was cited as a New York Times Notable Book of 1995 and a Publisher's Weekly Best Book of 1995. In The Brontës: A Life in Letters, the much anticipated follow-up to that landmark biography, Barker uses newly discovered letters and manuscripts, some appearing in print for the first time, to reveal the authentic voices of the three novelist sisters. The letters detail the siblings' self-absorbed childhood, highlighted by wild, imaginative games; the years of struggling to earn a living in uncongenial occupations before they took the literary world by storm; the terrible marring of that success as Branwell, Emily, and Anne died tragically young; the final years as Charlotte, battling against grief, loneliness, and ill health, emerged from anonymity to take her place in literary society. In The Brontës: A Life in Letters, Juliet Barker has produced a work of impeccable scholarship but also a story as dramatic, and undeniably readable as Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. "Barker proves herself an impeccable editor of family papers we are all the richer for possessing. " (New York Times Book Review) "Provides a real sense of what those strange, brilliant people were like. " (The Atlantic Monthly).
