Paolo Fabbri's Monteverdi, first published in Italian, is the leading study of the greatest composer of late Renaissance and early Baroque Italy, rightly called the "father of modern music. " A large number of contemporary documents, including some 130 of his own letters, offer rich insights into the composer and his times, also illuminating the many and varied contexts for music-making in the most important musical centers in Italy. Review The Galitzin Quartets of Beethoven / Princeton University Press:

This study is an analysis of the first three of Beethoven's late quartets, Opp. 127, 132, and 130, commissioned by Prince Nikolai Galitzin. The five late quartets, usually considered as a group, were written in the same period as the Missa solemnis and the Ninth Symphony, and are among the composer's most profound musical statements. Daniel K. L. Chua believes that of the five quartets the three that he studies trace a process of disintegration, whereas the last two, Opp. 131 and 135, reintegrate the language that Beethoven himself had destabilized. Through analyses that unearth peculiar features characteristic of the surface and of the deeper structures of the music, Chua interprets the "Galitzin" quartets as radical critiques of both music and society, a view first proposed by Theodore Adorno. From this perspective, the quartets necessarily undo the act of analysis as well, forcing the analytical traditions associated with Schenker and Schoenberg to break up into an eclectic mixture of techniques. Analysis itself thus becomes problematic and has to move in a dialectical and paradoxical fashion in order to trace Beethoven's logic of disintegration. [+]
The result is a new way of reading these works that not only reflects the preoccupations of the German Romantics of that time and the poststructuralists of today, but also opens a discussion of cultural, political, and philosophical issues.

Review Anton Bruckner - A Documentary Biography: Trial, Tribulation and Triumph in Vienna (Studies in the History and Interpretation of Music, Volume 83b) / Edwin Mellen Press:

This study provides a fuller account of Bruckner's early and middle years than has hitherto been available, and supplements the more accessible information about his years in Vienna by drawing on a rich source of material in contemporary reviews of performances of his works, comparisons between him and Brahms, and the well-documented accounts of hostility between the "conservative" pro-Brahms faction (represented by Hanslick, Halbeck and others) and the "progressive" pro-Wagner and pro-Bruckner faction (represented by the Schalk brothers, Ferdinand Lowe and Hugo Wolf).

Review Trauma Texts / Routledge:

These essays gathered from two special issues of the journal "Life Writing" take up a major theme of recent work in the "Humanities: Trauma". Autobiography has had a major role to play in this 'age of trauma', and these essays turn to diverse contexts that have received little attention to date: partition narratives in India, Cambodian and Iranian rap, refugee letters from Nauru, graffiti in Tanzania, and the silent spaces of trauma in Chile and Guantanamo. The contexts and media of these autobiographical trauma texts are diverse, yet they are linked by attention to questions of who gets to speak/write/inscribe autobiographically and how and where and why, and how can silences in the wake of traumatic experiences be read. These essays deliberately set out to establish some new fields for research in trauma studies by reaching out to a broader global context, into various texts, media and artifacts, representing diverse histories with specific attention to different voices, bodies, memories and subjectivities. This collection addresses the contemporary circuits of trauma story, and the media and icons and narratives that carry trauma story to political effect and emotional affect. This book was previously published as a special issue of "Life Writing".

It shows Hackley's intense devotion to her African-American roots, as she easily could have passed for white. Nevertheless, she traveled throughout the South in "Jim Crow" railway cars by choice. This work also recovers several of her influential published works, including "A guide to voice culture" (1909); "The coloured girl beautiful" (1916), an etiquette book for African-American women desiring professional jobs; and "hints to young coloured artists" a series of acticles designed to help young African-American classical musicans succed.

Dewey code: 709
Price: $24.95

Review Jack Goldstein and the CalArts Mafia / Minneola Press:

Jack Goldstein and the CalArts Mafia is anchored by Jack's reflections, dramatized by Hertz into first person narratives, of the early days of CalArts and the last days of Chouinard; the New York artworld; the trials and tribulations of finding and maintaining success; his inter-personal relationships; and his disappearance from the art scene. They are complemented by the dramatized first person narratives of Jack's friends, including John Baldessari, Troy Brauntuch, Rosetta Brooks, Jean Fisher, Robert Longo, Matt Mullican, and James Welling. There are provocative portraits of many well known personalities of the 80s, including Mary Boone, David Salle, and Helene Winer, all working at a time when "the competitive spirit was strong and often brutal, caring little about anything but oneself and making lots of money. " Has anything changed?.
