Review The Reception of W. B. Yeats in Europe (The Athlone Critical Traditions) / Continuum:

This is a pioneering scholarly collection of essays outlining W. B. Yeats' reception and influence in Europe. The intellectual and cultural impact of British and Irish writers cannot be assessed without reference to their reception in European countries. These essays, prepared by an international team of scholars, critics and translators, record the ways in which W. B. Yeats has been translated, evaluated and emulated in different national and linguistic areas of continental Europe. There is a remarkable split between the often politicized reception in Eastern European countries and Spain on the one hand, and the more sober scholarly response in Western Europe. Yeats's Irishness and the pre-eminence of his lyrical work have posed continuous challenges. Three further essays describe the widely divergent reactions to Yeats in his native Ireland, during his lifetime and up to the most recent years. [+]
Our knowledge of British and Irish authors is incomplete and inadequate without an understanding of the perspectives of other nations, traditions and individuals on them. This series profiles literary and political figures as well as philosophers, historians and scientists. Each volume examines how authors have been translated, published, distributed, read, reviewed and discussed in Europe. In doing so it throws light not only on the specific strands of intellectual and cultural history but also on the processes involved in the dissemination of ideas.

Review Angela Carter: The Rational Glass / Manchester Univ Pr:

This full scale study discusses Angela Carter's fiction in chronological order, and notes that her themes are fairly consistent throughout her work; but consistency of theme is not the same thing as repetition. The new angles and emphases that develop are partly from Carter's immersion in the changing intellectual debates of the times, and concurrently, arise from the reading she was doing at the different stages of her life, which stretched from the Medieval through de Sade to Foucault. Aidan Day describes theoretical arguments on the Enlightenment, modernity, feminism and postmodernism in a way which does not assume too much prior knowledge. Broader in its appeal than much of the specialist work written on Carter, which tends to stress special interests in fantasy, sexuality or the gothic, Day's clarity and thoroughness are refreshing in that they credit Angela Carter's fiction with the central place that it deserves.

Review Ernst Junger: Politik-Mythos-Kunst / Walter de Gruyter:

Ernst Junger (1895-1998) is an important figure in 20th century German intellectual history. His extensive work still polarizes literary critics and public response to his work, particularly because of the 'heroic nihilism' of his early work with its tendency to glorify violence, which originated in his reading of Nietzsche. At the same time, his linguistic artistry and gift of observation as shown for example in his travel writings and journals make him one of the most important figures in modern German literature. The present volume provides a complete compendium combining analyses of the most important aspects of his work, including his critique of the modern and his concept of aesthetic escapism, the political, literary, mythical and psychoanalytical influences on his stories and novels, and the role of the writer in modern philosophical and literary systems. The volume presents a many-facetted overview of the current state of Junger research and offers a new objective academic perspective on the influential work of this significant writer.

Review Night and Day: The Double Lives of Artists in America / Praeger Publishers:

In this collection of interviews, artists from various disciplines and in various stages of their careers discuss how they balance their art with the practical aspects of earning a living. They explore how this dichotomy, which affects them creatively, financially, spiritually, and professionally, can be both frustrating and nourishing. Some artists have managed to find art-related work to make ends meet. Others contemplate their dual role in both the artistic community and in the corporate or academic world. They discuss the role art plays in influencing social change and the role technology has played in revolutionizing the creation of art and its marketing and distribution. These insights into how artists merge their creative life with their financial obligations will be useful to both instructors and students in the arts. Topics such as how artists have managed to acquire flexible work schedules and educational leave will also appeal to professional artists looking for employment suggestions or alternatives. Representative artists include painters, writers, musicians, dancers, actors, and performance artists.
