Review John Dryden (British and Irish Authors) / Cambridge University Press:Dryden has sometimes been regarded as a writer narrowly of his period, a Restoration satirist whose work is largely concerned with the personalities, debates, and tastes of his own age. In this new study David -Hopkins shows him to be both a man of his time and a writer for all times - a great philosophical poet, the author of penetrating and exhilarating verse of general and permanent interest about love, the natural world, and the laws and principles which constrain, afflict, or ennoble human life. Dr Hopkins also analyses the personal, commercial, political, literary, and religious influences on his writing, and discusses in detail his major poetry, prose, and drama - paying special attention to the often neglected verse translations of his old age.

Review Man Ray / Taschen:Man Ray was one of this century's great experimenters; his photographs, Rayographs and solarizations form many of the most original images to be produced in the first half of the 20th century. A notable chronicler of the international avant-garde, Man Ray's portraits included those of Nancy Cunard, Lee Miller, Yves Tanguy and Marcel Duchamp. Many of his nude studies and still lives have now become iconic images in their own right. This monograph reveals some previously unpublished photographs, including various erotic compositions. It shows not only finished photographs but also Man Ray's working processes - crops, background manipulation and together methods. The text, which features essays by a team of international specialists, focuses on Man Ray's career as a photographer, his methods of invention and his unique treatment of Surrealism.

Review Samuel Wesley 1766-1837: A Source Book / Ashgate Publishing:Hailed as a child prodigy and later acclaimed as England's finest extempore organist, Samuel Wesley - son of Charles Wesley and nephew of John Wesley, the founders of Methodism - is best known today for his musical compositions and for his promotion of the music of J. S. Bach. At the heart of this source book is a calendar of Samuel Wesley's correspondence. The editors date and summarize the content of over 1100 surviving letters and other documents, most of which have not previously been published. The book accordingly reveals considerable new information about Wesley and his complex personal affairs, including his incarceration for debt and his confinement in a lunatic asylum for a year. Many details are provided about London musical life in the era from Boyce to Mendelssohn that prior scholars have not taken into account. The book also presents a chronology of Wesley's life, a descriptive list of his nearly 550 musical and literary works, a discography, an iconography and a bibliography. It is therefore intended to be the most comprehensive available reference source for Wesley's life, times and music.

Review Benjamin Constant: A Biography / Routledge:During his lifetime, Benjamin Constant was known as a political theorist, a courageous defender of liberal causes and a notable historian of the religious experience of mankind. Through his journals, autobiographical works and correspondence-documents mostly unknown by his contemporaries-subsequent generations have discoverd in Constant a fascinating and highly complex personality. In recent decades, a number of private archives have become accessible to scholars for the first time, and this has brought to light important documents by and about Constant. Drawing on these sources, many unpublished, Dennis Wood offers a fresh assessment of the writer and the man. He closely relates the development of Constant's political thought and passionate interest in the history of religion to his work as a novelist and self-analyst. Benjamin Constant draws together the considerable findings of modern scholarship, presenting a lively and sympathetic portrait of `the most eloquent of all defenders of freedom and privacy' (Sir Isaiah Berlin).

Review BEN NICHOLSON / John Murray Publishers:A biography of Ben Nicholson (1894-1982), a leading light of the British modern movement. Instrumental in forging a bridge between retrogade London and members of the Paris avant-garde of the 30s, including Georges Braque, Piet Mondrian, Naum Gabo and Kandinsky, he was also the creator of one of the rich decade's most famous icons, his white reliefs. This book shows how Nicholson's personality contrasted strongly with the austere image progected by both himself and his critics. His was a Peter Pan character, obsessed with ball games and word play, a dandy whose life entailed a succession of triangular relationships in which he either strung along two women or dallied with other men's wives.

Review Gabriel Fauré: A Musical Life / Cambridge University Press:Jean-Michel Nectoux's important new biography of Gabriel Fauré is the most comprehensive study yet of this central figure of fin de siecle France. It traces the composer's life and the rich cultural milieu in which he lived and worked: the world also of Saint-Saens, Flaubert, Verlaine, Ravel, Debussy and Proust. A large part of the book considers Faure's music, with particular emphasis on his adjustment to the musical language of the twentieth century and the formation of his late style. Works in all genres are discussed in detail. The book is the fruit of over twenty years' research by Nectoux, the foremost authority on Gabriel Fauré. He has read more than 5000 previously unpublished letters and has unearthed more than 120 musical manuscripts in the process of writing this definitive study. The text is richly illustrated with rare photographs from Fauré's lifetime and contains an extended chronology of the composer's life, a complete chronological listing of all his own works and a detailed bibliography.

Review The Sibelius Companion / Greenwood Press:The Sibelius Companion represents in its collected chapters the most advanced research in the field of Sibelius studies today. Since mid-century, so much new information has come to light that our understanding of both the man and his music has changed profoundly. These changes are fully represented in the present volume. Some of the topics examined, particularly the vocal music, including Luonnotar, which is here given a brilliant and provocative analysis, have previously been neglected. Other chapters deal with more familiar works, such as the Second and the Seventh Symphonies, which are approached in the light of recent scholarship and fresh perspective. Readers will find new light on Sibelius's biography, the first English-language investigation ever done of Sibelius and Karelianism, pioneering sketch studies, new analytical methods for understanding the music, studies in reception history, an assessment of the state of Sibelious research with a rich bibliography, the most complete chronological catalogue of works available, and a full "Register of Names" that identifies in considerable detail over 100 individuals and organizations important in Sibelius's creative life. Written in an accessible style, newly researched and fully documented, The Sibelius Companion will interest scholars, students, and music enthusiasts alike.
