Dewey code: 720.92
Price: $160.00

Review Sir John Soane: Enlightenment Thought and the Royal Academy Lectures (Cambridge Studies in the History of Architecture) / Cambridge University Press:

This novel and thoroughly documented study of Sir John Soane (1753-1837) contains the fullest intellectual biography yet published of any English architect. It also sheds new light on eighteenth-century British and continental architectural theory. Dr Watkin enters Soane's private dialogue with an astonishing array of philosophers, architectural theorists, art-historians, archaeologists, and anthropologists, whose writings he studied while preparing his lectures on architecture at the Royal Academy from 1809. The texts he studied range from classical authors to many of his most famous contemporaries. The book relates Soane's reading to his own architecture and to his lectures, which are published here in full for the first time, with over one hundred and fifty of his superb lecture illustrations, including twenty-five in colour. Recipient of the 1997 Sir Banister Fletcher Prize.

Dewey code: 791.430233092
Price: $42.00

Review Peter Greenaway's Postmodern/Poststructuralist Cinema / The Scarecrow Press, Inc.:

British multi-media artist, Peter Greenaway, has shocked and intrigued audiences since the sixties with his avant-garde approach to filmmaking and other artistic ventures. This book provides a collection of essays written about Greenaway's films and other publications, two texts by Greenaway on his own artistic style, and two interviews with Greenaway conducted by Paula Willoquet-Maricondi, one of the editors of the book. Each essay discusses different postmodern and poststructuralist aspects and styles of his films, starting with "The Falls" and the early shorts, and ending with"The Pillow Book". Several of Greenaway's other artistic productions, including his paintings and the city-wide installation Stairs, are also explored. The introductory chapter establishes the framework on which the editors have based their choice of essays for inclusion in the collection. Subsequent chapters examine Greenaway's position within British and avant-garde cinema, and his interest in constructing and deconstructing representational systems. His unique approaches offer new insights into the function of an artist today and on his relationship with the artworks produced. The final two chapters round out the book by including Greenaway's own interpretations and explanations of some of his most recent projects. At the end, there is a detailed listing of Greenaway's works divided by type.

Review Perdurabo: The Life of Aleister Crowley / New Falcon Publications:

Aleister Crowley, born in Victorian England to a life of financial privilege and religious bigotry, rebelled against his upbringing in every way possible. He became a mountaineer, a bohemian, a writer of sensuous poetry, and a practitioner of what detractors called "the black arts. " In reality, he was an uninhibited explorer of global spiritual traditions combining ritual magic with spiritual ecstasy. His winding path intersected ceremonial magic, Buddhism, Hinduism, Kabbalah, sex, drugs, poetry and music. And what he offered mankind was a manifesto for a new age: "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. " For the first time, the life of one of the most remarkable men of the 20th century is illuminated by a writer who is both an academic researcher and a lifetime practitioner.

Review The Life and Work of the Twentieth-Century Louisiana Architect A. Hays Town (Mellen Studies in Architecture, V. 10) / Edwin Mellen Press:

This is the first thorough and substantive examination of architect A. Hays Town's work. His 70-year career provides an ideal case study in the evolution of 20th-century American architecture, spanning from a period dominated by Beaux Arts formalism, through a period characterized by the assimilation and acceptance of European Modernism, to a period once again receptive to traditional and regional influences. This examination reveals the remarkable talent and logic which enabled him to assimilate a wide variety of influences from his education and early career as well as influences from the historical examples of his region. It contributes both to an understanding of the potential use of vernacular traditions in general, and specifically, of the rich architectural influences present through Louisiana's long and intriguing history. The study also includes a discussion of Town's habits, values and relationships, providing valuable insights into typical issues involved in the practice of architecture.

Despite Charlotte Bronte's entreaty to her lifelong friend Ellen Nussey to burn her correspondence, very little seems to have been destroyed, and in this fully annotated edition, based as far as possible on original manuscripts, many confidential and outspoken letters are published in full for the first time. As well as Charlotte's own letters from 1829 to 1847, a handful of important letters and diary extracts by her friends and family illuminate the writer's correspondence. This volume covers the period from her childhood up to the publication and review of Jane Eyre.

Review People of the Eye: Stories from the Deaf World / Bridget Williams Books:

Deaf people in New Zealand are often little known outside their own culture. People of the Eye brings their world to life in personal histories translated into English with a series of photographs of the deaf community. The storytellers are both old and young, and they reflect both the diversity and commonality of deaf experience; the painful lives of a generation brought up forbidden to use sign language contrasted with the confidence of young people using New Zealand Sign Language as they attend school and assert "deaf pride. " The differences between children growing up in deaf families and those who struggle with identity as deaf children in hearing families are illuminating. These are stories of joy and sadness, confusion and resolution, and regret and optimism.

Girls adore him, boys want to be him and mums just want to look after him. Now, with this authorised, visually stunning book, everyone can have a glimpse into his world. He may be only 19 years old but Kenzie has already experienced more than most of us do in a life-time. James MacKenzie was born to a working-class family and grew up in Chingford, in London's East End. At the age of only 13, he joined the 10-member-strong band Blazin' Squad as MC Kenzie. Created when two rival London gangs united in their love of rap music, within 5 years Blazin' Squad were performing on Top of the Tops. Added to that are their two gold-selling albums, six Top Ten singles and a number one hit, Crossroads. Since that time, Kenzie has gone from strength to strength, recently enjoying incredible success on Celebrity Big Brother, where he was favourite with house mates and public alike. [+]
However, despite new opportunities, Kenzie is staying true to his roots and is currently working on the next Blazin' Squad album, due to be released later this year. In My Life Kenzie tells his story so far in his own unique words, offering an intimate insight into life on the road, in the studio and at home. The scrapbook format incorporates over 100 exclusive pictures of his family, the band and Celebrity Big Brother, and will appeal to anyone who is a fan of this extremely charismatic new star.
