Review Notable Twentieth-Century Pianists: A Bio-Critical Sourcebook (Bio-Critical Sourcebooks on Musical Performance) / Greenwood Press:Pianists-their lives, performances, and recordings-are detailed in this two-volume set. Each biographical essay emphasizes musical background and training, special influences on development, significant performances, and more. Performance is analyzed and emphasis given to style and repertoire. For those pianists who recorded, there are selective discographies and reviews of outstanding recordings. The authors attended many performances and often supply a personal dimension to the discussions. This readable work, containing extensive documented coverage of 100 artists, will be appreciated by scholar, student, and music buff alike. As a sourcebook, this work contains biographical data; style analyses (culled from reviews, recordings, articles, and essays); pedagogical history and methods, when applicable; lists of selected references and reviews; and a representative discography. The result is an objective, thorough presentation of the lives and performances of 100 notable pianists. The list initially derived from correspondence with pianists and pedagogues in music conservatories and colleges throughout the United States and after eight years of research in both libraries and concert halls. The text reads easily (and is fascinating), but the vast amount of information and the careful "scientific" analysis make it a scholarly work of the highest order, useful to graduate students as well as the general public.

Review Life of Beethoven / Library Reprints:Alexander Wheelock Thayer's Life of Beethoven has long been regarded as the classic biography of Beethoven. Thayer's approach to biography was to present in chronological order the factual evidence concerning Beethoven, the man and his work, and to eliminate the analysis and aesthetic evaluation of the music. To gather the material necessary for such an undertaking, he went to Europe; there, he spent most of his life seeking out those persons still alive who had known Beethoven and studying the sources that were available. His biography succeeded in clearing away the romantic fiction that was then, in the 1870's, current and gave for the first time a full account of the composer's life which was based on reliable, historical method.

Review Profiles In Rock / PublishAmerica:This is a book about dreams, determination and passion. Everybody has a dream when growing up. When I was a child, many young boys wanted to be firemen or policemen, and girls teachers or nurses. Profiles in Rock is the story of several groups and individuals who dreamed of musical success at a very young age, and against the odds went on to achieve it. Bruce Springsteen fought his father's disapproval and a reputation as the "new Bob Dylan" as well as an overly enthusiastic manager who took him to court to fight over the rights of Bruce's music. Still, Springsteen went on to become one of the greatest rock icons of his time. Fleetwood Mac overcame several personnel changes, bad contracts, and romantic struggles within its own ranks to create one of the bestselling albums of all time. It is hoped that whatever your own hopes and dreams, whatever your own status in life, you can learn by their example of determination and passion for doing what they love the most. If these individuals can achieve their dreams, then so can we all.
