Review Collected Works of Francis Bacon / Routledge:

Sir Francis Bacon, statesman, essayist and philosopher, studied law and rose to high office as Lord Chancellor. He had enormous influence on the change of direction for scientific method from being speculative and philosophical in the Aristotelian tradition to making it experimental and factual. Bacon's philosophical influence extended to Locke and through him to subsequent English schools of psychology and ethics. Abroad, his influence also extended to Leibniz, Huygens and Voltaire who called him "la pere de la philosophie experimentale". This edition contains all Bacon's philosophical works as well as translations, plus literary and professional works and includes illuminating introductions and explanatory footnotes by the three editors as well as a new introduction by Graham Rees.

Review Steidl/Carla Sozzani / Yohji Yamamoto: Talking to Myself Creator: David Sims
Edition: Limited Ed
Publication date: 2002-11-15
Dewey code: 746
Price: $130.00

Review Yohji Yamamoto: Talking to Myself / Steidl/Carla Sozzani:

French electronic musician Jean-Michel Jarre once defined Yohji Yamamoto's style like this: "For me, a woman in Yohji is like a nymphomaniac nun. His clothes are at once sensual and very ritualistic. " This about a man whose reputation marks him as a designer of clothes for earnest intellectuals. This about a man whose 1998 "wedding" show featured a bridal striptease which took models from inflated Victorian crinolines down to slim-line dresses and pants. This about a man who is one of the most revered and idiosyncratic of 20th century designers. In Talking to Myself, Yamamoto has created an illustrated notebook that recounts the phases of his life. A work in progress punctuated with multiple images, Talking to Myself is the only book in which Yamamoto has become personally involved, making it a veritable extension of his own private world. In it, he "talks to himself" and with philosopher and art/fashion critic Kiyokazu Washida about himself and the objects he creates, objects that meld, blend with, and are assimilated by the person they seek to enhance. Pages marked by Yamamoto's pen and brush with Japanese ideograms, striking sketches, and abstract compositions help decipher his desire to achieve anti-fashion through fashion itself. Yamamoto's world is one of black and white symbols, a world in which color makes only a fleeting appearance.

Review No More Sad Refrains: The Life and Times of Sandy Denny / Helter Skelter Publishing:

With Fairport Convention and solo, Sandy Denny displayed one of contemporary music's finest voices; she also composed her own material, including "Who Knows Where The Time Goes"-a huge U. S. hit for Judy Collins-and sang on Led Zeppelin IV. However, Sandy tragically got caught in a spiral of drink and drugs and died at age 31 in 1978. Best-selling Dylan biographer Heylin draws on hours of new interviews to tell Sandy's story.
