Review The Prints of Vija Celmins / Metropolitan Museum of Art:Vija Celmins (b. 1939), best known for her intensely realistic paintings and drawings, has been engaged with printmaking since the early 1960s, creating a refined body of graphic work. As a printmaker, Celmins relies on traditional intaglio, lithographic and relief processes to produce quiet scenes of ocean surfaces, desert floors, and star-filled night skies that are highly modern in their denial of conventional composition. Review Julian Opie: Portraits 1997-2002 / Hatje Cantz Publishers:Composed of his characteristically simplified lines and shapes, Julian Opie's portraits are rendered through computer technology. Beginning with a photograph scanned into a computer, the artist uses software to edit the images and hone in on their graphic essentials. The fascinating results become icons that serve to identify the individuals with the least information possible. Whereas most of Opie's portraits feature unknowns, people drawn from his personal life, some commissioned works feature public figures like Kate Moss or Michael Schumacher. Review Schonberg and Kandinsky: An Historic Encounter (Contemporary Music Studies) / Routledge:The historic encounter around 1911 between the composer Arnold Schonberg and the painter Wassily Kandinsky occurred at a moment when the first wild revolts against traditional art, Dada and Futurism, had just manifested themselves. Independently of those sometimes spectacular activities, both Schonberg and Kandinsky had already concluded that the material and the compositional methods they had relied on in the past were exhausted and did not satisfy the development of their artistic ideas. Both artists had already submitted their modes of production to a critical analysis which resulted in Schonberg's Theory of Harmony and Kandinsky's Concerning the Spiritual in Art, both of 1911 - indeed the two artists had already been putting their self-criticism into practice for some time. In Schonberg's case this led to breaking with tonality; Kandinsky effected the transition to abstract painting. This book is a collection of the papers presented at the conference on Schonberg and Kandin.
