Review Sol LeWitt: Incomplete open cubes / John Weber Gallery:Begun in 1974, Incomplete Open Cubes is a sophisticated and elaborate expression of conceptualist art-making by Sol LeWitt, one of the most influential abstract artists of his generation. No other serial project by LeWitt or his contemporaries embodies with such eloquence so many of the central artistic concerns of the period. Incomplete Open Cubes exemplifies the deployment of a single idea to become, in LeWitt's words, "a machine that makes the art. " The work forges a new way of making art in its ambitious use of a serial system that enables a kind of "noncompositional composition. " The translation of the same idea into different scales and media is another key aspect of the work. All 122 variations in the series exist in three dimensions, from a set in which each cube is 2 1/2 inches square to the 40 inches square human-scaled versions. There are also entire sets of photographs, drawings, working sketches and notes, and an artist's book. This publication, which accompanies an exhibition of Incomplete Open Cubes, is the first sustained critical examination of this body of work. The book features much previously unpublished material, including working drawings, schematic drawings, and models, in addition to photographs of the installed structures. Copublished with the Wadsworth Atheneum.

Review Jeff Koons / Taschen:The Post-Pop superstar: An in-depth study of Koons's entire oeuvre to date. Limited to 1,500 numbered copies, each signed by Jeff Koons From kinky to kitsch to conceptual, Jeff Koons's art is anything but conformist. Since he stirred up the art world establishment in the 1980s with his unapologetic basketball sculptures and stainless steel toy blow-ups, Koons has been known as somewhat of a bad boy-a reputation he confirmed in the early 90s via works depicting him having sex with then-wife Cicciolina, the Italian porn star-cum-politician. Following this torrid phase, he changed gears to produce the gargantuan Puppy, the 43-foot tall floral terrier that now resides at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. Koons's exploitation of the banal, in the aggrandizement and/or embodiment of kitsch and pop imagery, has become his trademark; detractors may delight in their naysaying, but Koons's work commands millions at auction and his position at the forefront of contemporary art is indisputable.

Review Giovanni Baglione: Artistic Reputation in Baroque Rome / Cambridge University Press:Giovanni Baglione (c. 1566-1643) was one of the most successful painters in seventeenth-century Rome. Now he is among the most despised artists of all time. In 1603 he was the target of scurrilous verses circulated around Rome and, in response, Baglione brought a legendary lawsuit against Caravaggio and other artists. This book seeks to redress this antagonistic position and to view his life, as a painter, draftsman and writer. O'Neil explores Baglione's world through primary sources, including documents on apprenticeships, workshop arrangements, and collaborations. O'Neil also provides the first diplomatic transcription in English of the court libel documents. What emerges is not only a realistic view of Baglione and his contribution to the history of art, but also an illuminating glimpse into the world of the Roman Baroque. The book contains color plates, over 100 black-and-white pictures, and a checklist of paintings, drawings and documents.
