Review Alex Steinweiss: Creator of the Modern Album Cover / Taschen:Limited to 1,500 individually numbered copies, each signed by the artist Alex Steinweiss in his distinctive Steinweiss Scrawl, printed on archival-quality paper and presented in a custom slipcase. In 1939, Columbia Records newly hired art director, then 23-year-old Alex Steinweiss, pitched a novel idea to management: why not replace the standard plain brown album wrapper with an eye-catching package? The record company initially balked at the expense, but decided to take a chance on Smash Song Hits by Rodgers & Hart, a risk that paid off. Within months of Steinweisss repackage of their line records with abstract and sophisticated illustrations, and novel typography sales increased by as much as 800% and the album cover as we know it was born. For three decades, Steinweiss created thousands of original artworks for jazz, classical, and popular record covers not only for Columbia, Decca, London, and others, as well as designing logos, labels, adverting material.

Review David B. Milne: Catalogue Raisonné of the Paintings / University of Toronto Press:David Milne (1882-1953) is thought by many scholars and curators to be the most gifted Canadian artist of his generation. A modernist of high intelligence and fine sensibility, he has long been a favorite among painters and is held in high regard by leading collectors and art historians. Although he has become better known to the public in recent years, Milne's contribution to Canadian and American art history is far greater than has yet been acknowledged. Now, David Milne's work will be the subject of the first fully illustrated catalogue raisonnT ever devoted to a major Canadian artist. A work of art in its own right, the catalogue is the result of 25 years of research, during which paintings were traced across Canada, the United States, and ten other countries. Milne's painting notes, diaries, letters, and other comments on the paintings, as well as the records of dealers, auction houses, and patrons, have been entered and annotated for each work. Approximately 3000 illustrations adorn the catalogue and there will be nearly 200 colour plates. A complete bibliography of over 1700 citations and an itemized list for over 425 exhibitions accompany the catalogue entries. These two volumes will stand for all time as the definitive reference to Milne's art. All Milne collectors, all serious art students, and institutions of all kinds will find David Milne: A Catalogue RaisonnT of the Paintings an indispensable guide to the work of this major artist.

Review Artemisia Gentileschi and the Authority of Art: Critical Reading and Catalogue Raisonne / Pennsylvania State Univ Pr:A beautifully illustrated study of the life and works of this influential seventeenth-century woman artist, including the first catalogue raisonné of her autograph works. One of the most memorable creative personalities of the Baroque age and arguably the most forcefully expressive and influential woman painter in history, the Roman-born Artemisia Gentileschi (1593–1652/3) has become the central figure in the recovery of the history of art produced by women. Applying a rigorous methodology, this profusely illustrated study with interpretative text and catalogue raisonné embeds Gentileschi’s pictorially and emotionally compelling pictures within the actual sociocultural contexts in and for which they were created. The interpretive text analyzes key pictures and primary literary evidence to reveal the sweep of Artemisia’s oeuvre, chart her travels, define her standing with artists and patrons of the period, investigate the links between her financial situations and the artistic decisions that she made, and assess the validity of proposals regarding her activity as a still-life painter, her access to professional organizations, her level of literacy, and the nature of her subject matter. Exploring the question of the interrelationships among Gentileschi ’s gender and experiences as a woman, the state of her psyche, and her art, the text also confronts—and often challenges—the widely embraced feminist interpretation of her pictures. Many of the conclusions in the text are supported by an extensive register of archival documents and by the very core of the study: the first and only catalogue raisonné of Artemisia’s autograph works, each of the fifty-seven pictures exhaustively investigated as to basic factual information, condition and color, iconography, history, documentation and dating, existing copies, and bibliography. Catalogues of misattribued and lost paintings complete this comprehensive volume.
