Review Civil Society in the Middle East (Social, Economic and Political Studies of the Middle East and Asia) / Brill Academic Publishers:Launched in 1992, the Civil Society in the Middle East program brought together dozens of leading scholars to analyze political life through an exploration of civil society within the states of the region. A wealth of new material on non government organizations (NGOs), unions, political parties and professional syndicates is offered. This is the second of two volumes published by E. J. Brill, and it contains original studies of Algeria, Gaza, Iran, Israel, Turkey, the Sudan, Yemen and the Arab states of the Gulf. Collectively, these contributions challenge profoundly the notion that civil society is alien to the Middle East. As a two volume set, Civil Society in the Middle East is the most comprehensive analysis of state-society relations in the Middle East that is available.

Review Alvar Aalto: Gesamtwerk. Uvres Completes.

Review Eliel Saarinen: Projects 1896-1923 / The MIT Press:Eliel and Eero Saarinen occupy a unique position in the history of modem design. From Helsinki's famous railroad station to the Cranbrook Academy to the CBS Headquarters their work spans two continents and eight decades and has had a major influence on twentieth-century architecture and city planning. Eliel Saarinen: Projects stands alone in its treatment of the elder Saarinen's Finnish work in terms both of scholarship and production. Saarinen's ability to present his plans in expressive drawings was his trademark. Often considered independent works of art, 200 of these drawings are reproduced here in full color and augmented by 900 black and white illustrations in an unusually fine example of architectural bookmaking. Saarinen's Finnish years represent the laboratory within which he developed the skills and the concepts to advance an aesthetic of modem design responsive to international trends yet steeped in regional expression. Eliel Saarinen: Projects follows every permutation of the architect's career from the Finnish Pavilion at the 1900 Paris World's Fair, which brought Saarinen and his partners to the forefront of the international scene, to his design of stamps and banknotes, his large city planning projects, and his successful competition for the Chicago Tribune office building, which in 1923 prompted Saarinen's move to the United States. Marika Hausen provides a biography of Saarinen and a critical assessment of his handling of interiors and details, his execution of drawings, his use of stone and wood, and his design of building types ranging from country house to urban projects, followed by commentaries on the most important individual projects, including the famous studio/home of Hvitträsk. Kirmo Mikkola discusses Saarinen's work in town planning, documenting 30 of his most important projects. Tytti Valto writes about Saarinen's partnership with Herman Gesellius and Armas Lindgren, covering some 210 architectural and town planning projects produced by the firm. [+]
And Anna-Lisa Amberg describes and catalogs Saarinen's arts and crafts and industrial design projects. Eliel Saarinen: Projects has been in preparation for almost a decade. Research was sponsored by the Kone Foundation. A publication of the Museum of Finnish Architecture.

Review Pugin: A Gothic Passion / Yale University Press:By the early 19th century the Gothic Revival was well on the way to becoming the most important style in Britain and was influencing public taste all over the world. With its particular concerns for pattern, ornament, and anti-classical principles of design and structure, the style remained popular until the 1920s and continues to be well known today. Less familiar, however, is the man who invented the Gothic Revival, Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin, the most influential designer in 19th-century Britain. This book is the first to offer a complete appraisal of Pugin's life and achievements. As a designer of cathedrals, parish churches, schools, colleges, and private homes, and in particular as one of the two designers of the new Palace of Westminster, Pugin launched Gothic as the State style in Britain and in many other parts of the world. Pugin was also an industrial designer, creating furniture, metalwork, silver and jewellery, textiles, wallpapers, and book design in an integrated and coordinated approach to design that revolutionized public taste. He also influenced opinion by writing books that ranged from design manuals to polemical arguments in defence of his principles. Passionate about his beliefs and his Catholic faith, Pugin produced a body of work in architecture, the applied arts, and literature that is especially remarkable for a man who died at the age of forty. This beautiful book contains twenty-one essays by international scholars and specialists, who discuss in detail the various aspects of Pugin's life and career. Lavishly illustrated, the book will be the catalogue for the first major Pugin exhibition ever mounted, held at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, from 15 June to 11 September 1994.

Review Delugan_Meissl: Concepts, Projects, Buildings / Princeton Architectural Press:The first appraisal of the young Viennese atelier Delugan_Meissl and at the same time an innovative experiment in the visual communication of architecture. The work of the Austrian architectural office Delugan_Meissl has on the one hand a cosmpolitan flair, yet on the other it is marked by a decidedly urban and sustainable design philosophy. Evident in their striking projects are specific features running like leitmotif through their work: their distinctive use of the landscape and of previously undeveloped sites, their blending of urban and natural elements, and their perception of facades as space and surfaces to be utilised. The resulting designs are bold and dynamic with an unusually international touch for Vienna. This book consists of two volumes: one volume documents the fundamental concepts underlying their architecture, and the second volume presents 25 projects. The volumes are attached to each other and with the ingenious system of cross-referencing, enhanced by a precise and skiful graphic design, a web of meaning emerges which not only provides insight into the methodology of Delugan_Meissl but also gives an overview of their projects in town-planning, transport buildings, competitions and residential buildings. In contrast to most architecture monographs, this highly unusual book concept provides a fascinating visual expression of the two approaches to their work.

Review Mexico City (World Cities Series) / Academic Press:Mexico City "…the most documented analysis of contemporary urban Mexico. Peter Ward has done it again!" Susan Eckstein, President of the Latin American Studies Association Mexico City is one of the largest and most dynamic ‘megacities of the world. The last four decades of dramatic growth have seen great economic, demographic, political and social change. Does such profound change threaten the fabric of urban life in Mexico? Peter Ward argues that Mexico City is not falling apart, not in danger of imminent implosion. Rather, its citizens and local authorities are responding positively to the major problems that confront them: economic and commercial restructuring; privatisation and deregulation; excessive centralisation; low-paid job opportunities; poor housing and infrastructure; inadequate distribution of health care facilities; poor and corrupt policing; ecological fragility threatened by pollution and earthquakes. More democratic city management systems and structures are emerging, whilst grassroots movements are making their voices heard and affecting change. This second edition of Mexico City remains the best informed guide to this most fascinating of the worlds cities.
