Review The Panarion of Epiphanius of Salamis: Book II and III (Nag Hammadi and Manichaean Studies) (Bks. 2) / Brill Academic Publishers:

Epiphanius, bishop of Salamis on Cyprus from about 367 until 402, was a witness to and participant in the troubled era after the Council of Nicaea. His Panarion, or "Medicine Chest," is an historical encyclopedia of ideas and movements he considered heretical, and of the replies Christians ought to make to them. Book II and III deal with the Trinity, the Person of Christ, the divinity and personality of the Holy Spirit, Manichaeism, penance, matrimony and celibacy, monastic regulations, the Christian Calendar, all hotly contested topics in the fourth century. Book I, issued by Brill in 1987, concerns Gnosticism and Jewish Christianity. Together, the two volumes are the only complete translation of the Panarion in a modern language.

Review CEPHEUS: Living Comfort without Heating / Springer:

Passively heated buildings are those in which a comfortable temperature can be maintained without heating or air-conditioning. Increasingly, residential and institutional buildings are being built with passive systems that provide comfort without negatively impacting the architecture. The nine buildings presented here are not only exemplary, but can be built within the financial requirements of low-cost housing. CEPHEUS, a European-wide consortium of experts dedicated to passive house standards, offers concrete examples that will be of keen interest to architects and engineers wherever cost-effective, non-intrusive heating is required.

Review Weakness of the Will in Medieval Thought: From Augustine to Buridan (Studien Und Texte Zur Geistesgeschichte Des Mittelalters) / Brill Academic Publishers:

This work examines the medieval understanding of Aristotle's famous discussion of "weakness of the will" ("akrasia", "incontinentia") in the 7th book of his "Nicomachean Ethics". The medieval views are outlined primarily on the basis of the commentaries on Aristotle's "Ethics" by Albert the Great, Thomas Aquinas, Walter Burley, Gerald Odonis and John Buridan. An investigation of the earlier Augustinian discussion concerning reluctant actions ("invitus facere") ends the study. Recent studies of weakness of will have neglected the medieval philosophers. This volume shows that the 14th-century discussion makes contributions that are comparable to those of 20th-century philosophers.

Review The Dragons of Tiananmen: Beijing As a Sacred City (Studies in Comparative Religion) / Univ of South Carolina Pr:

"The Dragons of Tiananmen" is a contribution to scholarship in the field of Chinese studies and the history of religions and should appeal to a large audience in related fields of interest. It focuses on the symbolic meaning and religious significance of Beijing. The works of Lewis Mumford and Paul Wheatley have awakened scholars to the great importance for the more spiritual and symbolic aspects of traditional city building, factors which go beyond the functional, technical and utilitarian. But until now there has been no full study of Beijing, which is the most recent and most accessible example of the kind of religious/cosmic planning traditions. This book will illuminate the religious dimensions of one of the world's great cities, describing the city's meaning to both the upper classes and the ordinary people of Beijing, through an analysis of their myths and legends. The book is also a contribution to the history of religions. A number of recently published works show the current interest in the city from a religious perspective. "The Dragons of Tiananmen" goes beyond the analysis of a particular city to study the phenomenon of the sacred city in general. The book proposes a typology that can be applied to the study of the sacred city as a worldwide phenomenon and in this regard should prove to be of wide and lasting value.

Dewey code: 307
Price: $98.00

Review Le Corbusier - Polychromie Architecturale / Princeton Architectural Press:

When the Swiss wallpaper company Salubra asked Le Corbusier to design color schemes and patterns for their use-as they did of many famous modern artists-he created two collections: "Claviers de couleurs" in 1931 (43 colors) and the "Salubra Collection" in 1959 (20 colors). Available to the public for the first time, both color collections by Le Corbusier are reproduced in this stunning three-volume set through a high-quality printing process with 13 sample cards, four slide bands and 63 full color plates. Not only is this an unbelievably beautiful book, but also an indispensable tool for all those who wish to tackle color in architecture on both a theoretical and practical basis.

Dewey code: 393.089976
Price: $80.00

Review The Painted Tombs of Oaxaca, Mexico: Living with the Dead (Res Monographs in Anthropology and Aesthetics) / Cambridge University Press:

The Painted Tombs of Oaxaca, Mexico examines ancestor veneration and the mural paintings produced over a 3000-year period by the Zapotec, one of pre-Columbian America's most visually rich cultures. Providing an art historical and technical analysis of Zapotec mural art in tombs and on temples, Arthur Miller then examines these powerful images from the vantage point of family and lineage rituals related to the cult of the dead. Among his contributions are strikingly new observations on tomb reuse and the repainting of mural programs. More than a definitive record of a fading pre-Columbian visual tradition, this interdisciplinary study of funerary practice cogently demonstrates that the Zapotec tombs were, in effect, made to satisfy the needs of the living. Moreover, it documents the religious and social continuities, as well as changes, between ancient and contemporary Zapotec communities.
