Review National Romanticism and Modern Architecture in Germany and the Scandinavian Countries (Modern Architecture and Cultural Identity) / Cambridge University Press:Barbara Miller Lane focuses on the movement called "National Romanticism," which flourished in Germany and Scandinavia from about 1890 to 1920, and offers a new interpretation of its origins. During this period, painters, interior designers, city planners and architects created a new kind of domestic architecture and interior design, as well as monumental architecture. Drawing on local and regional folk traditions, and encouraging a simple way of life, architects such as Eliel Saarinen, Hans Poelzig, and Martin Nyrop, among others, looked back to medieval and even prehistoric times for their models, as they tried to create a new architecture for the new millennium.

Review Melnikov House: Moscow (1927-29) (Historical Buildings, No 4) / Academy Editions:The Historical Buildings Monographs series features buildings of historical significance, focusing on individual buildings from every period, from the prehistoric to the contemporary, which are influential for a variety of reasons. Some are cult buildings, whilst others have had a major effect on students at a certain point in time but have since returned to obscurity. Most importantly, all the buildings are considered to be unique whether in the context of time, geography, society or aesthetic impact. The titles in this series are: The How House; The Faculty Club, University of California; Manikata Church; The Architecture of Ludwig Wittgenstein; Viipuri Library and Christchurch Priory. The Melnikov House is a detailed account of the unusual cylindrical house built by Konstantin Melnikov for himself and his family in Moscow from 1927 to 1929. The house is explored in two essays and in photographs and drawings ranging from Melnikov’s original plans to photographs taken during construction and detailed renovation drawings. In his analytical essay Juhani Pallasmaa investigates the genealogy of the Melnikov House, looking at precedent and discussing the use of the cylindrical form. Andrei Gozak’s essay contains important new information about the original use of colour in the house and gives an account of the plight of the Melnikov House since 1929.

Review Hundertwasser: Catalogue Raisonne (Taschen double jumbo series) (German Edition) / Taschen:"The straight line is godless" - Hundertwasser Friedensreich Hundertwasser: born as Friedrich Stowasser, he lived and died as Friedensreich (meaning “realm of peace”) Hundertwasser – a name he chose for himself. Architect, ecologist, painter, designer, writer, innovator… his list of talents goes on and on. Hundertwasser reinvented the art of living as an artist 24 hours a day. The life’s work of this prolific creator is brought together for the first time in this limited edition of 10,000 books. Hundertwasser began to number and catalog his work in 1954 and had completed the task for his entire œuvre, including short histories to accompany each work, before his untimely death in February, 2000. He worked closely with TASCHEN on this project, designing the layout and the book itself: with rounded edges and a cover with colored velvet on black linen, the Catalogue Raisonné is an exquisite work of art. Volume I contains text by Wieland Schmied, a celebrated art historian and a longtime personal friend of Hundertwasser, with selected paintings, architectural works, projects, and manifestos. Volume II comprises Hundertwasser’s entire painted œuvre, adhering to his precise numbering and information system, his architecture as well as everything he ever produced, from postage stamps to license plates, architecture, and applied art. This is the testament to Hundertwasser’s work the way he wanted it. Because the book’s detailed concept, design, and text were finished by him before his death, it now speaks for him, breathing life into his work. [+]
The 'Catalogue Raisonné' is not a posthumous tribute but a living legacy. Collector's edition, with a colour etching (individually numbered and with the Hundertwasser estate stamp), especially created for this book edition, limited to 10. 000 copies worldwide. A sumptuous visual pleasure, Catalogue Raisonne compiles the entire oeuvre of Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Divided into two volumes and packaged in a handsome cloth and velvet slipcase, the set comes with a limited-edition lithograph stamped by the artist's estate; the whole presentation is a work of art in its own right. Volume one provides an in-depth biography of the artist by Wieland Schmied, an art historian and friend of the subject. Weiland considers such high points as Hundertwasser's year-long quest to create a single tapestry without a pattern, his "speeches in the nude," and his abiding environmentally conscious aesthetic. Hundertwasser's love of ecology was naturally reflected in his paintings and tapestries, which are permeated by strings and whorls of vibrant colors, organic forms and nary a straight line. He carried the visions he conveyed on canvas into architecture, designing amorphous, delightful buildings that come as close to Dr. Seuss as physics allow. Volume two is a sometimes overwhelming compendium of his life's work—painting by painting, sketch by sketch. Hundertwasser oversaw the production of Taschen's grand tribute, and his influence can be felt in the layout and text of the volumes. He died shortly after his work on the Catalogue Raisonne was completed, aboard the Queen Mary II. While not necessarily intended as such, the set is a loving final tribute to the artist. - Ryan Boudinot.

Review Bernini's Scala Regia at the Vatican Palace: Architecture, Sculpture, and Ritual / Cambridge University Press:Bernini's Scala Regia is the paradigm of the Baroque aesthetic. Combining art and architecture, sculpture and decoration in an illusionistic ensemble, this monumental staircase served as the main entrance to the Vatican Palace, as well as the principal connection between the palace and St Peter's basilica. The monument also encapsulates the essence of Bernini's working procedure as architect and designer as well as his creative response to both structural challenges and iconographic concerns. This book is the first complete account of the Scala Regia in the context of the long building history of the Vatican Palace, the history of St Peter's, and the architecture and sculpture of Bernini.

Review Nonlinear Model Based Process Control (NATO Science Series E: (closed)) / Springer:The increasingly competitive environment within which modern industry has to work means that processes have to be operated over a wider range of conditions in order to meet constantly changing performance targets. Add to this the fact that many industrial operations are nonlinear, and the need for on-line control algorithms for nonlinear processes becomes clear. Major progress has been booked in constrained model-based control and important issues of nonlinear process control have been solved. The present book surveys the state of the art in nonlinear model-based control technology, by writers who have actually created the scientific profile. A broad range of issues are covered in depth, from traditional nonlinear approaches to nonlinear model predictive control, from nonlinear process identification and state estimation to control-integrated design. Recent advances in the control of inverse response and unstable processes are presented. Comparisons with linear control are given, and case studies are used for illustration.

Review Finite Element Applications to Thin-Walled Structures / Routledge:This book presents a series of chapters describing contemporary developments in finite element applications to a number of thin-walled structures. Each chapter is written by an expert in their own field of research and is presented in a self-contained manner. The book can be conveniently divided into three parts. The first part gives an overview of the finite elements available for use with curved thin-walled structures and looks at the finite element method with the membrane theory of shells. The second part of the book examines the more intricate areas of thin-walled structures with cutouts and cracks. Vibrational, stability and non-linear analysis is also investigated. Attention is drawn to the lack of publications on finite element vibrational applications. The final part of the book looks at the application of finite elements to box beams, storage vessels pipes and shells, together with the effect of wind on tall structures. Finite Element Applications to Thin-Walled Structures will be of interest to research and consulting engineers in civil, structural and mechanical engineering and will also be of relevance to aeronautical and automotive engineers and naval arch.
