Review Human Biology in Papua New Guinea: The Small Cosmos (Research Monographs on Human Population Biology) / Oxford University Press, USA:

Papua New Guinea-a country that shows great diversity in a small geographical area-constitutes a unique and fascinating laboratory in which the impact of variety on a human population can be studied. For example, more than a quarter of the world's languages are found there among less than four million people. It can be regarded as a small "cosmos" in which complex interrelationships can be studied within a connected whole. This revealing book describes the human biology of Papua New Guinea. Additionally, studies of the geography, demography, social anthropology, linguistics, and human genetics of the country are presented. These studies are linked to biomedical and epidemiological research. The results are of wider significance and will be of interest to those working in human biology and biomedicine elsewhere in the world.

Led by Dr. Carlo, Wireless Technologies Research LLC (WTR) set out to answer the following questions: Is there a public health problem posed by the use of wireless instruments? If yes, what is the extent of the problem? What are the appropriate interventions to solve the public health problem? What is the appropriate intervention strategy for those interventions? By means of surveillance of world-wide research programs as well as WTR's proprietary, peer-reviewed research initiative, this book details the startling conclusions that everyone in the public health and wireless technology industry needs to know.

Review Advances in Cancer Screening / Springer:

Screening for cancer is an important focus of cancer control. Yet screening, as it involves administering a test to large segments of the population deemed to be at risk for the disease of interest, is potentially a major consumer of scarce health care resources. In addition, the benefits sought from cancer screening, particularly reduction in mortality from the disease, are not always realized, either for biological or organizational reasons. Thus, the paradigm that `early detection must always be beneficial', taught to health care professionals, and publicized widely through the media to the public, has been challenged in the last two decades for a number of cancer sites. It is the purpose of Advances in Cancer Screening to determine the extent to which the requirements for the introduction of population-based screening programs have been met, as a result of extensive research on screening during the last two decades, with a major concentration on findings from the recent decade.

Dewey code: 616
List Price: $218.00

Review ICRP Publication 83: Risk Estimation for Multifactorial Diseases / Elsevier:

This ICRP Publication reviews data on naturally occuring multifactorial diseases and develops a mathematical model to predict the impact of radiation-induced mutations on the frequencies of these diseases in the population. It provides a broad outline of the aetiological features and examples of multifactorial diseases. It considers the concepts and models used to explain their inheritance patterns, with particular emphasis on the Multifactorial Threshold Model. Conceptual differences from 'mendelian' diseases are discussed, and pertinent epidemiology is reviewed. Particular attention is paid to diabetes mellitus and to coronary heart disease. Mechanistic models in population genetics are considered. The concepts of liability, threshold, mutation-selection balance, and mutation component are integrated into a Finite Locus Threshold Model as a basis for risk estimation. The relevance of these findings for estimation of radiation risk of multifactorial diseases is discussed.
